This was THE MEET of the century and we had an amazing event at the Proving Grounds showing one car for every year of Chrysler glorious history, from 1924 to date. Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | That show area is known as Black Lake, due to its asphalt pavement. The Turbine 1.jpeg shows the arrival of the Proving Ground's Turbine car, with some honchos inside it. The T-car arrived while some of the members drove their cars around the high speed test track. The 67 Dart belonged to Darrel Some-body, from St. Lake City, who always dressed in bronze colors which matched the appearance of his car. The factory brought out its first-ever-built Plymouth to the festivities, there, for the Group Photo, as you can see in the first two of Thord's photos. Aaron's dad, Sherwood, the WPC President (rank has its privileges) then, got to drive the T-car around the Black Lake, that day. I got to sit, and be photographed, in it. The owner of that '31 Imperial would probably say the same about our cars! I like them all, right up to and (especially) that '82 K-car town and country convertible! I have always liked those. | ||

We had a tremendous rain storm 1 (-2) night(s), at the motel (which featured 360-degree parking around it, so that all-nite bull-sessions occurred as we walked from one car/party to the next one---learning great info about each car, in the process)....but, the phaeton's owner would not cover his car, and would be seen bailing it out each morning, saying that getting it and its leather upholstery be rained upon was no big deal, and that it had happened 'many' time before. | ||

I have always liked those. ************************************************** Back in my early car days, I heard MANY pre-war car fan (of which, at that time, they FAR outnumbered fin fans) say exactly that ..... essentially, "WTF do you want with one of THOSE ugly things?" Conversely, as a kid I enthusiastically watched the new cars every year, regularly visiting the dealerships with my other car nut friend and "dreaming" of when we could drive them ourselves. By 1970, the game was largely over ... body styling got fat and bulbous, big go- fast was replaced with stickers and decals, engines drowned in emissions hoses and wiring, interiors lost that "wide open" feel. Granted, there are some cars made post-70 that are interesting looking in their own right, but roll a 57 New Yorker up beside one and there simply is no comparison. I guess it is all what you demand from a car. After 1960, what I want in a car slowly dwindled to zero. | ||

I'm told the Imperials were a little tempremental but, the technology in those cars was pretty advanced for their day. | ||

I didn't get there in time to attend the meeting at the Chrysler Proving Ground but I did get to see the Cobo Hall car show on Saturday and the banquet in the evening. Great days! I had a 1982 Dodge 400 2-door in those days that I had purchased new and I went to the show in that. It was a decent enough car although I didn't like the vagueness of the shifter (it was a special order manual box car) I seem to remember reading that Chrysler improved the shift lever in later years. It was great, no trailer queen, those cars where built to be driven. He drove the 31 Imp from one of the north east states (New Hampshire?) and back again. And it spent the week in the parking lot with all the other cars. The Airflow DeSoto did also belong to Chrysler Historical Collection. Location: The Mile High City | The only car I would have replaced at the Proving Grounds tarmac would be the 300G. I have nothing against the 300G and that is an excellent example, but 1961 should have been represented by the final De Soto! Just a little tip-of-the-hat to a great marque. Just as if they recreated the event today, you would want 2008(?) to be represented by the last Plymouth. Edited by Lancer Mike 2011-03-09 6:15 PM | ||
