Wise Old Village Idiot Posts: 3591 Location: Dellslow, West ("By God") Virginia ! | ,,,,humbug, to you too, you old fart! LOL There is Hassey Chassys, and Rocket Chassis here, that build those roundy-round cars. NEITHER one of 'em will even come near a piece of exhaust pipe! I need to find a muffler shop that has a mandrel bender, that can bend up custom duals and shuch.

Expert Posts: 1493 Location: New Castle PA | Don't know about the mandrel bends (isn't that where the diameter of the pipe stays the same throughout the bend, unlike the more common bends that show a decrease in diameter?). Shaffer's Exhaust in New Castle will custom bend anything, but with the reduced diameter at the bend.

However, almost every corner muffler shop has those 'compression or crush' bending machines. Take a 2 1/2" dia pipe, and crush bend a 45, or any degree bend, the inside diameter is 'crushed' to, 2" Majority of those 'muffler' places don't even know what the mandrel bender even is! I want to make a custon set of duals on a New Ford Van I'm fixing. Found out, that the old Porter Glasspacks are being remade! Got a pr, and want to make the duals like OM, mandrel bend, stainless. Wish they has places like Bob's Muffler out in Calif, around here! He even gives a Old Fart's discount on his custom mandrel bend duals! What he charges for a custom set of mandrel bend duals, is what they charge around here for 'compression/crush' bend duals! Jeeze! I did a google search, and the only listing for a mandrel bend muffler place (Jak's Muffler 894 Henderson Ave) up there, is in Little Washington. Not even sure if he has a mandrel bender. I'll call to make sure tomorrow. What I was looking for, if there would happen to be a place up there around Pittsburgh that one of you guys actually had some mandrel bend exhaust work done, that I could go to. There are NO muffler shops in WV that has a mandrel bender. Even down there in the southern part of the state!

Extreme Veteran Posts: 594 Location: Melbourne, Australia | Canman, a mandrel bender is HARD to find. Used in industry for heat exchangers, ballustrading, food transport etc etc. They can bend to your sample. (I worked for such a place and made the dies). Have not seen an exhaust shop in posession of one of these machines. Usually they buy a series of 45,90,22.5 degree bends and fabricate to suit with car on a hoist. Diameter is not compromised and more adept to custom fitting like our old cars. Stainless and mild steel bends available. TIG (heliarc) welding usually used. Just had some work done last week on my Galaxie using a series of mandrel bends. Once past the steering box, went back to regular 'press' bends. Colin
