Expert Posts: 2647 Location: Minor Hill, TN | That is not good. When you get your new tires mounted and balanced and if the tire store offers nitrogen take it instead of regular air I would take it Here are the reasons 1. you do not lose as much as you do with regular air maybe a pound or 2 per year 2. tires stay cooler. 3 . better fuel economy 4 tires last longer The tires on my current '61 are 4 months old as soon as I can I am taking it to a tire store and have the nitrogen put in the tires

Extreme Veteran Posts: 502 Location: London, England | I managed to get the column tube out last weekend, and the upper column bracket out during the week. I have the brackets painted and ready to go back, and the column tube has been stripped, primed and has one coat of colour on. I hope to finish colour coat and lacquer this weekend, and then I can get the dash painted. I intend to do this in the car, but I have a feeling that removing it will be just as easy, or easier with less masking to do! I'm on a deadline now as we hope to move house in August, so it ideally needs most of the interior back in so I don't have to move lots of boxes.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7211 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | When I bought the car - the interior had been re-done - with correct materials and colors - and even the door panels had been re-covered over top of the original vinyl with new vinyl. However on the very top of each panel the glue job was poor and the vinyl started lifting to where you could not longer see the "pleated" effect on the door panels - so today I got really brave and removed the 2 front panels, and then removed the vinyl overlay on the top section, to reveal perfect pleated vinyl underneath. I had to use a bit of goo-gone to clean glue residue off but otherwise they look great. I still have to do the 2 rear quarters yet, but I am very happy with the results of the front doors. Top photo is what it looked like before removing the overlay vinyl. I think they must have used latex-based contact cement instead of the real stuff otherwise if would never have lifted or been easy to peel off as it did. Expert 5K+ Posts: 7211 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | d500neil - 2014-06-14 1:17 PM Why do you suppose that 'they' did, what they did, to the trim panels? If you mean re-covering over the top pleated portion, probably because the new dark green vinyl is a a slightly different shade of green than the old, and the old vinyl has an iridescent quality to it. Still it looks a lot better this way. The light green vinyl on the panels has been over-laid as well, but it has the iridescent sheen. Anyhow, I just finished the 2 rear panels, and they all now look great. I had a good idea in my head that the original vinyl underneath was in good shape, as I have a couple of photos of the car's interior before it was restored and the panels basically look OK. In fact I'm not sure that the entire panels were all that bad to begin with. Edited by imopar380 2014-06-14 8:04 PM (panel4.JPG) Attachments ---------------- panel4.JPG (144KB - 383 downloads)

These 2 photos are from prior to the interior restoration. The door panels actually look quite good. It's obvious that a prior owner did try to do interior maintenance as the years dragged on, you can see the front seat bottoms and driver's seat back had been re-upholstered at different stages with different materials. Just needed a steamer in the background and some well dressed folks to complete the scene. Rainy New England Spring...we have not had many good driving days lately. It was pretty dry and dusty - hope it'll be ok. I vacuumed off the back of the dash (ugh) and hope I can get my friend to weld up the holes that have been drilled over time tomorrow or Tuesday. Extreme Veteran Posts: 502 Location: London, England | A productive few days, in short bursts... my mate welded up the extra holes in the dash, and I found some time to grind the welds flat and get some primer on. Then I had to find something to remove the contact adhesive revenue where my over-enthusiastic trimmer had glued on a piece of vynil as a kind of dash pad. No idea why, I never asked him to! Some Metal-Prep cleaned it off and took off the top layer of paint, which is cool because it should make a good key for the new paint. I still have to finish this as I ran out of time. Some parts arrived from John at Big M, so I'm now working on cleaning and painting small parts.

Member Posts: 23 | I finally got the rear inner and outer axles seals replaced on my 56 Royal Lancer. I also got the rear wheel cylinders replaced and brake shoes re-installed. I repacked the front wheel bearings after checking to make sure the front brake hydralics were okay. Now I just need to rebuild the master cylinder and I can finally start getting this thing back driving again! Does anyone know the torque specs for the bolt on the rear brake drum? Expert Posts: 2206 Location: Muskego, WI | I should have taken pictures before I wrapped everything up and packed them away, but I reassembled my re-chromed tail, reverse, and license plate lights. All new gaskets, new bulb sockets and wiring, I was even able to carefully install new reflectors in the reverse lights. You'll just have to wait to see them on the car when it's all done. Unfortunately, my engine has been delayed as the builder has to finish a high dollar race engine, but once that engine is done he'll be back on my Hemi. Can't wait to get my hands on it, it's been too long.

Expert Posts: 2206 Location: Muskego, WI | I did find one picture I took of one of the tail lights. All of the other light assemblies are restored to the same condition. I'm most happy with the reverse lights as I found a way to carefully disassemble the reflector tipped release button for the hidden gas door. I found a reflector of the same diameter and was able to reassemble the button so it looks great, no sun faded and cracked reflectors. I don't know why the picture is upside down. I even saved a copy of the picture upside down in hopes that when I uploaded it the picture would end up in the correct position but those ended upside down too. Go figure, but I think the picture still displays the condition. Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | There was room between the radiator top tank bracket (off on the side to the left of top) and the top tank itself to slip the sensor into the opening. I sealed it in with that black sticky cork that's used to cover up AC Evap valves. There was also room to slip the sensor into the radiator fins themselves but I found that with all the airflow thru the fins that the area and sensor was actually a lot cooler then the coolant itself was so I went to the between the bracket and the tank location.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 502 Location: London, England | Having left my newly-painted dash to harden off (it had been painted for a few days now) I discovered that something had landed on it and made a mark right in the middle of the upper section Gently sanded it out and painted another couple of coats. I'll have to clear coat it again, assuming I get away with blowing in just the problem area. Then I tried to get the plastic surround back on the push button pod. Of course it's shrunk a little, so it pulled back off the front left edge, taking the paint with it. So, painted that again. I read all the way through the 27 page "body sealing" guide the other day, and had one rear quarter window out. No sealant at all, so I reassembled it with sealant - it rained (lots) this morning and I seem to have solved it. Now to find the remaining small leak at that corner of the car. I also found where LOTS of rain was coming in around the windshield. No prizes for guessing it was at the lower edge near the passenger side corner, so raked out the dust and other crap and will seal it when it dries out tomorrow. Then the other rear quarter window and I can start to get the interior back. 4 weeks until we move house, and I want it at least mostly assembled! I really must get the gas tank back in...

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | You're lucky to find those leak locations at this 'early' stage of your restoration. You can just hose it down real well, to find all the leaks---trunk's OK? Have someone who trusts you, or vice versa, get in there with a flashlight and a marking-pen.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 502 Location: London, England | Not so early - this is the second restoration after the car was damaged by an idiot builder. Trunk's OK in that the small leaks haven't damaged the new floor, and I've sprayed wax (I used Dinitrol) in all the cavities and down the wheel housings. The car's been under a cover for the whole winter so has stayed pretty dry, but the cover was destroyed by a storm. The leaks amount to maybe a quarter/half cup of water after a night's downpour, but I could see some surface rust around the base of the rear screen behind the parcel shelf (so waxed there too, just in case) and a trail of water down the dust on the rear wheel housings. At the front I could see water pooling at the inside base of the screen, but as the car was painted with the screens out there's no rust. Pulling back the rubber with a screwdriver I can see water in the channel both inside and out. I had to take off the moldings to get to it, so I've taken a couple of steps back, but it's worth it and only 15 minutes work really. I don't need to get in the trunk - dust is a great indicator!
