The D-501 with the yellow backgraound is supposed to be the vendor prototype for Hardware Acceptance. Note the different eye slots between the flat D-500 and D-501 Emblems.

Alright - seems like just as good of time as any to display a bit of ignorance:

I have never been in the presence of or been able to study up on either a '56 Dodge D-500-1 or '57 Dodge D-501. Can anyone shed some light on either or both of these models (for me as well as any others who've little to no knowledge of these hen's teeth) with some history?

A sidenote I will toss in .....

Back in the day I came onto what I thought was a 1958 D-500 emblem. It was the same shape and size and looked much like a 57, but differed in small details and the background pattern was different. Since joining this group, I have seen several genuine 58 D-500 cars and the emblem is NOTHING like the 57 unit, or that odd one I always thought was a 58.

I am going to guess that there may have been more than one jobber source for those emblems in 57, and each had a little different version of the same idea (?)

*************************************

Tim in Golden can shed a lot of light on the 56 specifics.

As I understand it, the D-501 was essentially a race-ready dual quad - solid lifter Hemi - big brakes - stiffer suspension - sway bar package above and beyond the plain old boring D-500 option.

There were a lot of difference between a D-500 and a D-501, most notable was the D-501 came with a 354 Chrysler Hemi. Thre were two D-500 emblems. The first was a flat face unit (upper left picture). According to Neil, it was never actually installed on a production car (or maybe a very few). This emblem was the basis for the D-501 emblem. The lower left emblem is the production D-500 unit, which has a 3-D face and is a bit smaller.

That's right .... one of those emblems had a flat face, while the other one was rounded.

So what were the differences between a 56 D-500 and the 501 ?

There was no 56 D-501, only the D-500 and D500-1 and I have heard a D500-2 but I have to say I know almost nothing about the 56 models. I think all D-500's were based on the Dodge Hemi. The 57 D-501 was based on the Chrysler Hemi and although many sources indicate that it used a 1956 300-B engine this is not so. It was a 354 but (from what I have gathered) used the 4-bolt 354 truck exhaust manifolds and the 1957 300-C intake manifold and carbs. It also was supposed to have a chrome plated crank. It was stamped D501-xxxx on the block, not KD501 as some believe.

The best estimate of D-501's produced is 102. Today about a half dozen are accounted for and only 5-6 are intact. Most were 2-door sedans with all deletes but a number of convertibles were made. Two are known to exist. One is very original and the other is currently being restored in CA.

There was NO "round-faced" D501 emblem; but there was that flat faced (differently shaped, and with a flat-back, instead
of being properly curved, to fit the shape of the deck lid) ....emblem, in production.

The yellow-background emblem appears to be a correct D501 emblem; note its rounded upper
area; it appears to have a flat-faced knights head on it.

I don't know whom, but someone is re-popping the D500 emblems, and he's doing a good job of it, too.

The flat-faced D501 (and D500) emblems were created by a company that did not know to make the emblems
have a curved back.

I don't know anything about the flat-faced D501 emblem, at the upper-right side, but, whoever painted it (a person, or the factory) failed to reverse the color schemes; real/production D501 emblems are black-over-red; not red-over-black (like all of the D500 emblems were painted).

I just sent a couple pics to David, to post here.

One will show a flat-faced (slightly physically larger, too) D500 emblem,, that I saw about 10 years ago, at the
car auction for Reno's Hot August Nites.

The emblem is obviously mis-painted, but, it was installed on a bogus 1958 Royal 500 2-dr HT.

Some of these flat faced emblems got into production, and I've heard that some/all of them might have beem
installed on L.A.-built D500's.

The other pic is a so-so quality shot of the 1958 D500 emblem, which featured 'wings' on its upper exremities.

The 57 was installed on the pass-side; 58 was on the driver's-side of the trunk.

Pulling from memory, the 56 D-500 pkg consisted of the Hemi, stiffer springs and sway bar, and the 12" Chrysler brakes (and crossed flag badging).

I have seen 57 325's with and without the little bumps on the valves covers. In 392 parlance, this means solids lifter and hydraulic lifters respectively. If the Dodge Hemi was the same, what designated solid lifters vs. hydraulic ??? Did 56 have both as well ?

The 56 D500-1 is a Heavy Duty or as Dodge called it "Ultra Performance" D500. It featured upgrades to the suspension using many parts from the 56 Imperial including 5 on 5.5 hubs and wheels, as the option list grew it eventually included a 315 dual quad carb engine assembly. While intially the factory documents refer to it as the D500-1 model before the end of production at least one bulliten calls it the D501 model. The information is generally reported without much regard to the facts and sometimes opinion has become fact. The real ideas for the 56 D500-1 and 57 D501 were to build a car worthy of intense competition. The fact that a few people have overlooked is that by adding the dual carb setup to a 56 makes it more interesting, it does not however address the numerous other upgrades which were used to designate the real D500-1.

Um, the color of that original-kinda condition 58, above here, is "rust"......or, maybe that's old primer.

It's a golden-oldie, from my archives, that I happened to have here in the office; think I've got another view of this car,
at home.

I don't know who is re-popping the 57 (anyway) emblems, but they have shown up on Evilpay; Jim Hoek bought one of
them.

Years (decades!) ago, I paid $50.00 to have a guy 'make' a couple 57 D500 emblems, out of brass.

Not only did the guy steal the good condition sample emblem (excuse me: it got 'lost' in the mail!) but the two 'emblems'
were worse-than-horrible; they were laughable!

Maybe I'll go find my pic of THEM, and have someone post their image, here!

Dodge really should have picked a different name. When I was new to fwdlk, I thought people were talking about 2 ton trucks. '57 D500 truck emblems are pretty easy to come by!

1956 D500-1 had even heavier susp than the heavy susp which was included on 1956 D500s. Increased compression ratio to 10:00 to 1, 10 gear ratios avail, larger exhaust valves, 8 3/4 rear end, alum 2 4bbl manifold freerer, breathing exhaust manifolds. 1/4 mile elapsed times were documented low 14s equivilant to late 60'smuscle car era times. Info is in COLLECTIBLE AUTOMOBILE Oct 1997.
I believe D500-2 refers to a 56 built w/ a 56 300 engine for Kiekhaefer of Mercury Outboard fame. He used many D500-1 & 300s for racing to promote his products.
I remember a 56 Dodge D500 in our town that won many trophies but I don't remember which 500 it was. Maybe I'll go see the guys about it

I dismantled the carport this weekend in preparation to move the garage and build a new shop. Our D-500 wagon had not been out on the light for quite a while. Thought it was a good time for a photo.

Gerry, the D500-2 was a mythological beast; I have a copy of all the 56 Dodges and Chry's that Kiekaefer owned,
and have obtained IBM cards on them (back when the H.S. allowed such research, and at reasonable costs per IBM card copy) and K. never took possession of any such animal.

The "D500-2" might have been the designation for a test mule, at the proving grounds, but there is no evidence that any such car ever left the factory.

Brent, have you ever looked for any Broadcast Sheets inside your wagon?

Thanks Neil; some of th hot shot gggurus tell us this was made or not made but Chry did things that were'nt supposed to be made. The test mule makes sense. My dad sold Dodges for ages
I remember 3 tone 56 Plym from the factory, 68 Super Bees w/ hood scoops * hurst shifter green Chargers w/ red bumble Bee stripe. Test track carrs were sold @ auction w/ Chrysler lease cars
some ended up on the car lot & they were "hot" It isn't so long ago people denied the existence of 57 D501. You might like the collectible Auto article. How about a report on all your fact gathering on D500s

*************************************************

Neil,

I am so focused on permits and design on the shop that the wagon is just sidelined, waiting to get put in the shop (that hasn't been built yet) ! I have done almost nothing with it but pull it home and occasionally check back with the original owner / son about some photos he says he has of the car and family from way back. They currently have a kid and his family living with them, so their house is rather crowded and finding the photo albums is not going to happen until the inlaws get their own place. In the meantime, I am putting the shop on hold for a few weeks while I finish a couple jobs and get my workload under control.

Yeah, back in the 80's I paid $50.00 (IIRC--big bux, then) for someone in PA-area to cast these two beauties, in brass,
from a good-condition OEM emblem.

The guy later said that the donor emblem had been lost-in-the-mail, after he had sent it back to me.

Funny thing: I have no recollection ("motivated forgetting", it's called) of specifically discarding these things, but, they're
long gone....

'62's hard to come by.

'56 was posted recently, somewhere around here (beware the imitations of this year's emblem).

59's are common, both OEM and (somebody's-) repopped ones---at least, they used to be common, until
the advent of the clones....

There were two styles to the '60 emblems; with the one on the wagons having flattened wings.

Here are some 1956 500 emblems.

According to Neil, the red car has repop badges which are identified by the border around the flags that the OEM badges do not have.

...that, and the general shape-style of the "500" numbers, on the re-pop/aftermarket "flags-500" emblems.

That would be the non-station wagon emblem.

The wagon emblem looks like this one , but has noticibly shortened wings on it.

1960 was the only year with two different versions of the D500 emblem--but, it would be neat to see a 1961
D500 wagon, someday.

I guess the '57 had two different emblems too, flatties and high relief. With the exception of the 60 wagon, I guess we have them all. Thanks everyone. Did the dash-ones have a different emblem? With these, I might create one of those poll threads and we can vote for our favorite emblem. Not car...emblem.

Did the 1959 Dodge wagons have a D500 badge located in the center of the tailgate, above the DODGE lettering and below the tailgate handle?

I have an old picture of a Sierra that has "something" there and it looks similar to the 1959 D500 badge shown above.

*edit*

Well how about I just scan it and you can see for yourself? It's a grainy scan, but I think you can see what I'm talking about.

I know that it is pre Forward look but I am suprised no one has mentioned the first Dodge 500, the 1954 Pace car convertible. Sweet little number with the 241 Hemi, had an Offenhauser aluminum intake with 4 barrel and other tweaks. That Offy manifold had a Dodge part # . Anyone have a picture? There was a beautifully restored one in our area years ago but I can't find any pictures in my collection. Rumors of another in a western NY junkyard that I need to check out also. This was the first use of the crossed 500 flags emblem, same as used in 56.
