I'm might go look at a 1959 Desoto Adventurer for sale tomorrow. I may buy it for a few parts and resell or part out the rest. What should I look for in the V.I.N. to tell if its a real Adventurer.

I think the first characters would be M49 (The 9 being the key for Adventurer).

They only made 590 hardtop Adventurers for '59, you should try to save it.

If it is the same car, which there probably aren't too many kicking around in Texas, the fellow that owns it had it at a body shop where they proceeded to either sell or lose most of the Adventurer pieces, and promptly went out of business.

It seems you hear more and more stories of this type, where the heck did honesty go?

The owner of the car was so disgusted, he mentioned selling the car rather than going on with it's restoration. ---John

My point exactly, Danny.

Is she really too far gone to save?

It could possibly be saved, I don't know. I haven't seen it in person just a photo, and spoken with the owner. I just want a couple of pieces from it. If I decide to buy it, I'll take the parts I need and re-sell the rest.

I spoke with the owner a bit more about the car on Friday evening and when I said I would be there to pick it up the next day with cash in hand, he backed out and stated he wasn't ready to sell at that time. He stated that he had another interested party that he was giving first crack at the purchase. Maybe the other guy won't buy it and I will get another chance. Oh well, easy come easy go.

What parts are you looking for?
I know a guy that parted one out years ago, and I can ask him. Was this car black or white?
They only came in 2 colors.

Man - an Adventurer PARTS CAR. Funny.

I hope it goes to put a Firesweep sedan back on the road, wouldn't that be poetic justice!

Form the photos I've seen of the car it is either white or primer, I can't tell for sure. I can't remember for sure, but I believe the the owner said it was originally black. The bumpers and trim were removed from the car, but he assured me it was a bona fide Adventurer. From what the owner stated I would assume the Desoto was about 60% complete. It would have taken quite an investment to restore, but worth while none the less.
The part I need the most is the passenger side exhaust for the 58-59 dual quad motors. They seem to be, for me at least, pretty hard to find. I was going to use it for my 58 Fury. My car is about 99% complete except for the exhaust. My intentions for the Desoto was to remove the exhaust and maybe a couple of other smaller parts and resale what was left and regain as much of my expenses as possible. Unfortunately for me, the sale didn't pan out. I'll keep looking though, and one day the parts I need will show up.

You mean the exhaust manifold? Or is there something different about the exhaust itself?

I just need the passenger side exhaust manifold, the one with the provision for the choke cast in the top. I have a regular manifold and I was going to modify the head pipe to accept a tube for the choke. There shouldn't be any reason why it shouldn't work, and I think I can route the tube so it won't look out of place. I figured if I could get the right part I would, but if I couldn't, I can fabricate something that would look good and work fine. Anyway, thats my plan until I find the correct manifold.

YEAH, Danny!

One of the obvious tell-tales/give-aways of the (58, too, IIRC) 59 dual carb-setups is the lack of the correct passenger-side
exhaust manifold, which has a unique design/shape, which may include an orifice for the asbestos heat riser tube.

That manifold was only installed on dual-carb cars, so 'you' can't just go pull one off of some other "lesser" model, to create a
real dualie (and, that's a GOOD thing).

If you know what you're looking for/at, the lack of this exhaust manifold is almost as obvious as seeing rubber fuel line(s)
or improper fuel filter(s) on a dual-carb re-creation.

It's ironic that that Craig's List engine shot doesn't show the passenger's side exhaust manifold.

That very well may be the same car. I only saw a picture of the car but I'd swear that's it on craigslist now. The guy was from Texas but stated that the car was promised to someone in Arizona. Thats the reason he gave for not selling the car to me on the day I offered to bring the cash and a trailer. He did say though that the car did have the correct manifold when I specifically asked about it.

Oh, by the way, if thats the same car, the guy on craigslist is asking a bit more than what I was told it was sold to him for.

It's in Arizona alright.

The craigslist says "Phoenix", but the area code (928) is somewhere north of Phoenix - Flagstaff/Williams?

Looks like the AZ a**hole posted a quick turnaround on this car - AZ definitely has more than its fair share of a**holes.....

Sorry, folks - I just can't abide sleazy tactics like that.

I'm not going to get involved in the new owners business or say what I was told his buying price was. I'll just let this one go. You can't win them all.

I guess I don't understand what happened here. What did the AZ seller do that is "sleazy."
