Expert Posts: 1506 Location: Colo Spgs | Hola Yo'll This photo reminds me of a need in our family for another car. My dad's empolyement sent us to another location and we the family was to follow as soon as "school got out". My dad overly said to get a good Plymouth or Dodge Wagon --- my mom traded in The Ford for a '59 Kings Wood Wagon. When The Chevy went away in 1966 - it was replaced by a 1966 Fury II Wagon ( and then a 1969 Dodge Wagon ). **** With so many 59's me thinks ---was this photo "seeded" by the local Plymouth Dealer. Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | That old $28.9/gallon price of Regular grade gas would correlate to about $3.00, today; not cheap, especially with the cars getting something less than 12 MPG in around-town driving, every day....and requiring regular mechanical attention, and with a 'good' car surviving for 100,000 miles, maybe. The 57 Custom Royal is VERY interesting, not only because it has the really-early fluted stainless steel eyebrow trim, but also because it was built having the 1956 "Custom Royal" fender name plates on it. Those '56 name plates are featured on early produced prototype cars, in advertisements, but, here's a car that was actually built with them, on it. I'd really like to know when this car was built...even if it was shipped off to a European car show (in France?).

You may be right with the price correlation about one-to-ten, as new-car prices took a similar development. But why only 100.000 miles? In a dry state without salt, a late-1950's car could last far longer, if well maintained IMO.

In a dry state without salt, a late-1950's car could last far longer, if well maintained IMO. I saw lots of cars from that era exceed 100,000 miles, though anything over that amount was usually considered a bonus. You could reasonably expect to re-ring and grind valves at that mark. It wasn't all the car design, but also external factors. Lubricants were not nearly as good as those of today, and roads were much worse. Very few roads were paved where I lived, so the cars were constantly exposed to rough dirt and gravel, and all the dust kicked up while driving. Filters plugged, seals leaked and grit wore out bearings and brakes. The same roads turned to mud bogs when it rained, exposing the entire undercarriage to four-wheeling conditions. Winter brought snow drifts to plough through and washboard ice in towns that shook bodies apart. We didn't have a garage for our cars, as they were reserved for farm equipment. When temps dipped below zero, you pumped the accelerator to pour raw gas into the engine so it would start, and often used ether in extreme cold. Imagine the cylinder wall lubrication issues that caused. I will also take issue with 12 mpg average. Yes, on some cars that was normal, especially if you lived in cities, but all the 318 powered cars we had averaged about 18, and flathead sixes were in the 20 range. Manual overdrive bought you one or two more. Edited by GaryS 2014-04-22 9:20 AM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | The Chrysler Kid - 2014-04-22 10:36 AM Anyone else see anything odd about this photo? It's a Matador / Polara body with the Dart Grille, Dart emblem and Dodge script on the hood rather than DODGE block letters, and has no model name on the front fender, but was likely ordered/sold as a Matador. They were ordered this way to save money and weight. It also has 15" wheels, and look at the size of those tires - they almost look like radials but this is definitely an 1960 photo! So why did the CHP just not buy a Dart? I think they specified a 122" wheelbase - Darts were 118". Manual overdrive bought you one or two more. There were a couple things I believe were major factors in why people thought a vehicle was "high mileage" and worn out when it had more than 60K on the odometer and/or more then 4 years old. One was the use of oil bath air filters. They are terrible filters and let tons of dirt thru with consequent high engine wear. The second was the VERY common practice of dealers as well as individuals rolling back odometers. It would not be at all unusual for a car with 90K real miles to have been rolled back twice and be sitting on a lot showing 29K miles.
