Member Posts: 25 Location: Imperial,CA | Love seeing the postcard of Guy Moothart Chrysler/Plymouth! I believe that it's when they were located in Compton, CA, which they used until 1974 when they moved to Lakewood and then to its current location in Cerritos. A few years back an ad from my collection was added to the IML http://www.imperialclub.com/Yr/1968/Ads/68guyMoothartadreg.jpg

Veteran Posts: 124 | "visitors were cautioned not to lose their cars" ...in a time warp! By the way, the "Princeton WV 02" photo on the previous page features the Lavon Theater, with a very radical looking marquee. The film that is playing is "Fort Dobbs." That movie was released in theaters in late April, 1958. That means the Plaza with the fender skirts is just over a year old. I think it is safe to assume they were after market add-ons. Nice picture of the Braga bridge, which links the town of Somerset to the city of Fall River, Ma. I grew up not too far from there and crossed that bridge many times. This picture appears on the Wikipedia page for the bridge in a slightly higher resolution. The 54? Chevy to the left has a caved in passenger side rear quarter. This is pretty much the way I remember seeing a great many cars when I was a kid. My brother owned an Opel similar to the one in this picture. His was light blue. The 62 Plymouth to the far right is pretty much brand new. There were a few of those in our family as well. Brother and Dad both owned one at one point. They were really good cars. The license plates on all of these cars appear to be black, indicating this picture was taken in 1963. Edited by Valiant_200 2014-04-02 9:18 AM

Managed to find all four volumes and they're on the way. Well done,I'm surprised you got Volume 1 so easy as it was first published in 2004 in hardback and has been out of print for a wee while. abebooks.com I have found more fabulously useful books from this site than I can recall. Abebooks is a gathering place for the world's used book sellers. There are two types of vendors here that deal with automotive books. One is the car book vendor who charges accordingly, the other is the book vendor who happens to have some car books. The price difference is usually substantial. Volume 1 has already arrived. Second vendor had 2,3 & 4. I'm expecting them by the weekend.

Expert Posts: 2308 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | I find this interesting. This ad from presumably early 1968 shows the dealer's telephone number in the old style with the exchange identified by two letters. Surely the phone company had switched to all numbers by 1968? (or maybe just not in California) I still remember my Ohio phone number and that was TEmple 5-5020. When Bell System went to all numbers the telephone number became 835-5020 but this was early in the '60s - about 1962 I believe? Veteran Posts: 124 | hemidave - 2014-04-05 8:04 AM MESSIER'S DINER I suppose everyone is interested in the Savoy in this picture. Of course I would own it in a second if I could, but I think the Chevy delivery being used by a television repair service is pretty remarkable as well. The most obvious reason would be that there are not a lot of them left. Probably fewer of those than there are 55 Plymouths. Fewer still if you were to look for one that hasn't been turned into a rat rod. I can't remember the last time I saw one. The less obvious reason is because my uncle owned his own TV repair business in the 50's and 60's and had a vehicle quite similar to this. Edited by Valiant_200 2014-04-06 5:59 AM

Location: Parts Unknown | I too, noticed the TV service vehicle. Before 1960, TV was a serious commitment in money and installation (note that "serious" ladder). One often required far more than just a TV set and a pair of rabbit ears on top to make it work, and TV businesses were a going industry unto themselves. Telephone exchange prefixes persisted in some communities (and the minds of their inhabitants) well into the 1970's. Around the area where I grew up, Bellevue had "Sherwood", Redmond had "Tucker", Kirkland had "Van Dyke" and even around greater Seattle, the advertised numbers were given with the exchange letters. It seems to have died out from general usage by the 80's though. With the advent of FAX machines and other phone system-based electronic gear, phone numbers outgrew the possible numbers combinations and we saw a boom of new area codes created to acco- mmodate the exponential rise in numbers. I have an old brass letter opener from a feed store that existed way back when in my once-little hometown of Kirkland. I found in the top desk drawer in the office of an abandoned chicken farm near what is now called "Totem Lake". The phone number is a simple "MAin - 4", predating automated exchanges, ... one would just pick up the receiver of their phone, wait for the operator to answer, and tell them you wanted "4" on the main exchange. Those were simpler times.
