Expert 5K+ Posts: 7409 Location: northern germany | Doctor DeSoto - 2014-03-24 11:43 PM I find it amazing that some guy from the other side of the planet, who cites reading car magazines as research, is going to tell me how it was in the world I lived and grew up in ! Don't tell me what my world was like. I was here, I lived it, Elvis was considered risque and R&R was considered "greasy kid's stuff". "your world"??? dreamer. fact is you wasn't even born in the 50s. you were born in 1961 or later. so you "lived" nothing. you are the post hippie generation. so stop bulls**tting. i did, unlike you, allot of research. you made a number of statements here that makes it obvious that you have never even looked in a period car magazine and that show your ignorance about how things were. for instance, when you expressed surprise that a late fifties automobile road tests mentions fuel economy. i explained above, in detail, why your personal view of "how things were" is just untrue. i have arguments, all you do is blabbering about how YOU remember things, and since you can't remember anything that you have not experienced your blabbering is worthless. why don't you ask gary or joe (sonoramic60), who REALLY lived it, how they remember things? you could learn something. and why don't you look up 1950s/early 60s car magazines? they prove that you are wrong. again, it was not unusual for a 18/19 year old to drive a 3-5 year old car back in the day and it was not unusual that parents handed over their rides to their kids when they bought a new car after 2 or 3 years. and kids DID borrow cars from their parents. they do it now, they did it 55 years ago. that is a fact. and kids back in the day loved rock'n'roll. go figure. elvis "risque" by 1960? you gotta be kidding. he served in the army and appeared on nationwide tv shows with frank sinatra, dean martin, etc. you have no clue what you are talking about. as i said above by the end of the decade r&r was socially accepted. r&r was pop (POPULAR) music that was played by major stations throughout the country. that is a FACT. did you bother to listen to the broadcasts above? have you actually read my message? all your questions will be answered.

Location: Parts Unknown | Fantasy Boy, Your clinging to the exception (instead of the rule) makes your argument absurd. Joe was not the norm. He was the exception. And asking a kid from 1958 what the world looked like is only going to provide a kid's perspective. Ask his parents what 1958 was like if you want a realistic viewpoint. They were the ones who had a career, a mortgage to pay, and were concerned with civics, politics, and things besides teeny-bopper stuff. You go on with your fantasy that the 10% was actually 100% and have a good time with it.

Good to have an expert on the team. we made progress, you are not longer claiming YOU "lived it" but we are not talking about the US, we are talking america in the 1950s. different planet. and who is "us"? actually its you who is telling people, who really lived it, how it really was, although born after that period and completely ignorant on that subject, as obvious by your statements. i guess i know why "hobby" kicked you out. this site is just not big enough for 2 bullsh!tters btt: Edited by 1960fury 2014-03-25 9:04 PM (1957_DeSoto_Firesweep-large.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 1957_DeSoto_Firesweep-large.jpg (38KB - 191 downloads)

Veteran Posts: 124 | I just want to say that I enjoyed the discussion about life in the late 50's and early 60's, particularly the part pertaining to radio. Gary S, in particular, had some excellent insight and I can only guess that he is either connected with the radio industry in some way or is a radio hobbyist. 1960 Fury had some excellent links to old radio airchecks that I really enjoyed. Dick Biondi, eh? Good taste man. He was a legend. When it comes to what was listened to on car radios in 1960? Well, the pop music chart is a good place to start. But that would have been far from all that was heard. Crooner artists and easy listening "elevator music" stations would have surely comprised a fair portion of the entertainment. Country music, and I don't mean Rockabilly. I am talking hard core Johnny Cash and Hank Williams country. They most certainly would have been a big piece of the listening pie. Don't forget about news and sports. Lots of baseball games heard on car radios, I am sure. In the end, you are probably all correct in your recollections. Everything was listened to in cars. You ought to think about who made out in the generous back seats of your cars instead. Now THAT would be a fun discussion. Oh yes, the picture. I think this is a first time up for this one. I was looking for a picture of a Western Auto store and I stumbled on this: Edited by Valiant_200 2014-03-27 3:01 AM (56_dodge_On_Side.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 56_dodge_On_Side.jpg (48KB - 191 downloads)

Today, in fact, today, I can turn on the same radio in the same Firedome and listen to the same Vin Sculley announce on the same speaker the Dodger game. How's that for ironic history?
