Here is a good example of a fin era car that looks perfectly fine with a continental kit. The
overall lines of the 59 Ford are upright and "formal" enough, that the kit actually looks pretty
good.

And those giant round tailights seem to work with the big round spare somehow. Generally I don't like connie kits either but this one doesn't look too bad.

Yes, the funky "elf ear" backup lights and "V" of the rear deck trim also play well with the
overall kit design too.

I bought a nice, original one-owner 58 Buick coupe with a kit. It wore it well too. The
less "swoopy", more bulky (one might call that "more formal" ?) cars were more naturally
inclined to work with the formal look of a continental kit, skirts, etc.

I saw quite a few 59 Fords with kits over the years. Always liked the way the block letters
F - O - R - D were arc'd over the cover center.

Hola Yo'll

As you that have been adding to or watching this interesting "thread" know it was started 2 May 2007 from Scotland. I too looked at the photos and such. After a while I stopped
and turned my attention in another Forward Look direction. Then last week again "looked" at this thread. On the third page and about half the way down I saw a photo which was
posted on 30 December 2008 that "caught my eye" of a car that was taken in Banning-California. I copied it and sent it to a brother of mine who now lives in the same town.

This is what he just said, " ... It was taken probably before the '80's because of the housing that is not in the photo around The Base Ball Park. The "turn out" on Hwy 243 was
paved last year after The Fire's in Banning. He also stated the photo location is about a 1,000 feet below their home ( he can not go to the store with out passing this location )".

Hola Yo'll

I recognize this Holiday Inn which was located on S.W. 13th Street in Gainesville. It was operated by: John H. Hintermister-Jr. At that time I went to what was known
as P.K. Younge "Laboratory" School and he had a son which was in the same year of class ( room ). One year when his son had his Birth-day, Dad would showed up
( with a couple of "restaurant uniformed" helpers ) with Cake & Ice Cream ( Vanilla or Chocolate ) for all. Because of this we all just knew they were the riches people in town.

Did they have a car with fins - I don't know.

What a desolate looking motel!
I'll take the '60 Plymouth over that Caddy any day.
Also, note the odd Canadia-only Poncho Arcade, er, Cicada, er Acadia! Based on the Chebby II.

Hollywood Christmas 1961

I had a real WTF moment at 6:30 when I saw "Pinky The Rollerskating Donkey."

Now THAT is something you don't see every day. Who got the crazy idea to put roller skates on a donkey?! They should hire Pinky to work at a Sonic.

That photo in B&W above of the 57 Chrysler wagon looks like a scene from "The Misfits" 1960, Gable and Monroe.

Haha. Since you were alive back then Doc, please explain the fascination with creepy clowns that
the good people of 1961 seemed to share? Good Lord there sure were a lot of them in that parade.
Clowns, cowboys and indians, Soupy freakin' Sales. It's like the 1961 Pop Culture Hell demo reel.
I am surprised Mitch Miller isn't in there somewhere so we could all sing along. I never laughed so
much at an old parade.

On the other hand, did you see those gorgeous cars?! I love those Imperials and
plucked chicken 300's, but the brand spankin' new 62 Dodge convertible is the one that really
stole my heart.

I saw Lawrence Welk in a Chevy? I thought he was a MoPar man?

I liked the early 60's Studebaker Lark convertible. Not many of those left.

I love the cars, the music and the architectural designs of the era,
but oh gawd you can keep those TV shows!

That was a very interesting time capsule. Thanks Vedette for sharing.

=======================================================

Can I explain it ? It just WAS !

We were all a whole bunch naive and corny and easily amused by stuff that seems unbelievably
unbelievable, or just plain creepy.

On one hand, I love certain aspects of it. As an example, I really dislike modern action movies.
The over-done "reality" of constant explosions and cars cartwheeling down the road is just too plain
stupid, and the non-stop movement that won't allow my eyes to focus on anything gives me a head-
ache ! Conversely, as silly as 50's sci-fi movies were (just watched The Brain That Wouldn't Die),
they incorporated a lot of personal imagination to make them seem "scary". Something modern
movie makers seem hell bent to fill the void on to a point where no imagination is needed. The
experience is 100% "provided". Does that make sense ?

On the other hand, the themes of various MCM movements are often creepy and nauseating. And
I say that in terms of having been there then, and being a fan now. The wifeperson discovered my
collection of 50's household do-dads and pushed me to do our house up in it. Odd, as previous wives
have BANNED it from the house ! ... but that's another story.

So, she co-erces me to bring down the furniture hoisted to the rafters, and gather up the lamps and
other accoutrements and this gets her into hunting down more. The jones is, MCM is not ONE style.
There is good, and there is bad, and there is a whole lot of rather boring, milquetoast stuff in between.
She had stars in her eyes and was dragging home all sorts of kitsch. We had to have "the talk".

My spin on good 50's style is the playful, "Atomic" sort of style that came into vogue with the rockets
and space-think of the 56-60 period. The Calder mobiles, the Perry Mason clothing, the boomerangs
and darts, pinks and turquoises, inexplicably set against organic grasscloth and light colored woods.

But in her/our search, it is hard to believe how much of that clowns and bad gravel art, cheap wire
furniture and overall "junk" one must go past to find the real gems of the era. Part of it was the difference
between what lawyers and airline pilots bought for their upscale homes, versus what the average schmuck
bought at K-Mart.

In a post Googie era world, nearly everyone saw the entire period as one big disaster in bad taste. But
like anything, it is not that simple. 1964 era MCM is quite different than 1956 MCM. 1976 MCM is a whole
different ball of beans. They are nothing the same, yet maintain a constant of Danish modern and certain
linear aspects to keep them *kinda* related.

For me/us, the downer, like with old cars, is that the public at large, took to disdaining an out-of-style
look, and the more outrageous examples were the first targets to get updated or removed. By the time
public opinion turned, what was left was the more mundane examples, or the later stuff, so finding a top
shelf early example of either is much more difficult than finding a top shelf example of a later one. What
I mean by that is a really awesome George Jetson 1957 house is exponentially harder to find than say, a
more mainstream Brady Bunch house of the mid-60's, which is harder to find than a mid-70's rancher, just
as finding a 56 Custom Royal convertible is exponentially harder to find than a fancy 1966 Dodge and so on.

I will never understand how some schlubs have made MILLIONS selling "Precious Moments" figurines to
Americans for the past 40 years, but it says a lot about Americans and kitsch and clowns and creepy stuff.

I just choose to acknowledge it as part of the scene and make mine a different scene.

Hola Yo'll

A Chevron Advertisement was posted on 12 august 2012 ( page 105 ). I like it because we have a Mont Blue - Ds Soto that was sold new there.

Reference the Hollywood Santa Parade from 1961, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that Barbara Billingsley, Tony Dow, and Jerry Mathers were in the parade - seated in a 1961 Ford convertible, no less.  (No Hugh Beaumont for some reason?

No, it's a Kingsway, according to the emblem on the quarter. Also, bumper wings were not available in Canada.

That guy looks more "southern" than Canadian to this profiler. Did they sell Kingsways in Mexico,
Puerto Rico, or Cuba ?

You're right, and yes Kingsways were basically sold everywhere except in the USA and Canada. I'm thinking Mexico on this one.
