The first commercial flight of the Boeing 707 was Pan American's "Clipper America" -- New York to Paris on October 26, 1958. Since many of the 1959 models had appeared on the showroom floor, I was inspired to shoot my first "Cars of 1959" photos a few years back against the backdrop of the Museum of Flight's retired Air Force One -- a 707. See unrestored, original examples of '59 Dodge, Oldsmobile, and Buick.

This is great work Jim on the before and after shots, even though sometimes I'm not so keen on the after pics, and that '58 DeSoto Firedome is famous in this thread, due to the colour of it's hood-look back a couple of pages. Location: Parts Unknown | It is reasonably easy to tell the difference between the 58 DeSotos if you know the "clues" to look for. The Sweep has the short Dodge nose with the heavy chrome eyebrows. The Sweep and Dome share the same small (low) rear window, but the Dome will have the long DeSoto-Chrysler nose. Fireflite and Adventurer have the high backglass and DeSoto-Chrysler nose. Triangular aluminum rear sweep inserts and colors gold, white, or black (six possible combinations) will set an Adventurer apart. Other clues that can be hard to see in distant photos are side trim stopping aft the front wheel opening - Sweep/Dome - where this carries all the way forward to the headlight on Flite and Adv. Adv. also has the stainless decklid bars. Clear as mud, eh ?

I remember patched headlight brows and quarter panels by the mid 1960s. Older folks called it "retroactive air conditioning." K. P.S.- It also hurts when I see members take their cars into the salted streets during winter. But then again, some criticize me for driving mine in the rain, even though washing a car gets it's wet, too!

The Dodge Firearrow & Firebomb sold individually, last year at the B-J for $ 1Mil-each, iirc, and the Plymouth Belmont has changed hands a couple time; the DeSoto Adventurer-II, in the front row has appeared at the B-J iirc, and the K300, at the 2:00 position, also crossed the B-J block, I recall. My personal fav, the DeSoto Adventurer-I has whereabouts unknown, and Ex Jr. has said that it may have been crushed, after Ex Sn. had driven it regularly---but, I'd also heard that it had got shipped to So. America---hope that's true, because I really want this car still to exist, somewhere, as being a sort of Lost Dutchman Goldmine. As far as the other three cars are concerned (1,3, and 9-o'clock positions) , does the former-Corp still own them???? Edited by d500neil 2010-02-02 4:07 PM
