Expert 5K+ Posts: 7400 Location: northern germany | just got the full set of "highway patrol" (20 dvd's) from http://www.bestoldshows.com/81082.html?*session*id*key*=*session*id... i only watched two episodes but so far i've seen 58 and 59 dodge cop cars and 58 plymouth and 59 desoto (coupe) getaway cars! i love broderick crawford too. the pictures are blurry but still great fun too watch. don't think it's a chrysler sponsered show (like "fury") because they drive fords and gm cop cars too. i lmao i didn't know they had 58 buick patrol cars! did they realy expect to catch someone with a 58 buick?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7807 Location: Williams California | California Highway patrol did use Buick 2-door sedans in 1955, but that was the last year [to my knowledge] that a Buick was chosen for Highway Patrol use here. And Jimmy, you're right, the '58 Buick would be a poor choice for a patrol car, just on the basis of the weight of those models. ---John

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7400 Location: northern germany | well, the normal cop car with 2 elephants on top and 4 flat tires would have had a chance, but a 58 buick...? i watched some more episodes (this are 160+ episodes! must have been a succesfull show) forwardlookers galore, including a 57 chrysler convertible (driven by a "well known pusher") 57 dodge cop cars, 57 plymouth wagon, etc etc. boy i love the fifties. Wise Old Village Idiot Posts: 3591 Location: Dellslow, West ("By God") Virginia ! | Sid, others. You should beable to find out this bit of trivia on Crawford. I read 'this' someplace, years ago. Filming for the 1/2 hour episodes where Crawford was involved, had to be finished before noon. For he got drunk in the afternoon. He also lost his driver's license for DUI. Close up filming of him driving a car, getting out, was done on a sutdio lot. A stunt double was used for actual driving, long range shots. Remember, a CHP was present for all filming as a technical advisor. Something was mentioned,,,, that most of the filming was done out in some Valley, where there was actually NO other traffic.

Expert Posts: 2308 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | I never knew that about Broderick Crawford! It kind of shakes your faith in TV cops...I too watched it in the fifties. I never saw a Buick being used as a cruiser by the CHP after 1955 so they probably realized what a stone that car was. "The Adventures of Superman" was MoPar heavy during the last two or three seasons. I remember an episode about a disappearing town that had 1956 Plymouth police cruisers and a 1956 Imperial 4 door sedan. (Clark Kent/Superman was driving that one to lure the crooked cops to try to stop him for speeding. The car belonged to the "Daily Planet" motor pool.)

The '55 Buick Highway Patrol cars were Century 2-doors (I had one), basically a Special body with a Roadmaster drive train. They had 3-speed column shift and 3.91 rear end gears.
