I wonder the same thing about red, especially since it has become so cliche for auction
queens, hypesters, flippers, and douchebag owners. Who wants to be associated with THAT ?

Cool old video of a drive in cali in 1958. It's in black and white. How many of our cars do you see? Kind of like Google street view! Marc.

What is this car, looks to be air-cooled engine?)

Joakim that car is a Renault Caravelle seemingly designed by Virgil Exner Jr http://www.madle.org/exnrjr.htm

and
From Ray Bell
Which is not air-cooled...
Merely rear-engined.

Thanks for the info, new to me.

Matt asks, above:

57 Desoto convertible. Why pick all white when there's so many other colors........

...simply, because a white car matches the white appearance of the Gulf service station.

All that 'white' in the photo tends to concentrate and maintain your attention toward the middle of the page, and the message of the
advertisement.

Your attention zero's right into the car's wheel, and moves out away from that central point.

The idea was not to highlight any particular car, but the service station and its message to the reader.

Everything in the ad is bright white or detail-blue.

The car even has a blue interior.

Very effective, simple composition ad

Appears to be a biz coupe the blue car. What kind of nut would order white walls, full wheel covers, and bumper wings on a biz coupe?

When you look at it that way, it does make sense. I see a lot of medium price 57-59 convertibles in all white or all black, probably conservative owners originally. They look sooooo nice in flashier colors, like my current avatar, for instance.

=================================================

This car was reaching the end of its expected life cycle (or beyond) by the time this photo
was taken. The tires are probably the 20th set it has worn, and the bumper could easily be
a collision replacement.

One might also consider that drag guys tended to be car guys in a broader sense and often
fixed up older cars like you see this one.

Outside the Bronco Bowl in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas. It opened in 1962, and judging by the cars in the photo, this must be a fairly early image.

"Bronco Bowl opened in 1962 with Hollywood celebrity Jayne Mansfield headlining the event. This entertainment playground included something for every restless soul - slot cars, bowling, pool, archery and golf. Don’t forget the Hinkle’s snack bar, dancing at the “The Pit,” and those great concerts featuring performers like the Everly Brothers, REM, U2, Clash, B-52's, the Alarm…an endless list. And, oh, yeah, they had a bowling alley."
