Doctor DeSoto - 2011-10-17 11:34 AM All those Plymouth pictures are great ! Note the 58's with dog dishies appear to have body colored wheels, as opposed to Argent.

Actually, they appear to be argent silver to me. Plymouth was the low cost car. They would never go through the expense of color-coordinating the wheels. It would slow down production.

Ron

I agree with your thinking but most other "cheap" cars of the time had body color wheels when eqipped with dog dish caps. Including all Mopar A-bodies up to the late sixties..

This last shot is just the ultimate in cool. The "George Jetsonism" of grocery
shopping is the height Googie playfulness. How did pop culture not just stop
right here and say "we've reached the top, ... this is it!" ????

Before anybody starts drooling all over their keyboards, in Re: the 'windshield pricing' on those used cars, above,
kindly multiply those prices by a factor of 9 (conservatively) and see what they would be selling for, in 2011 dollars.

And, for that much money, you'd be buying a daily-driver that would be getting about 10MPG around town, for about
$3.00/gallon, and which would require the replacement of virtually all of its mechanical features on a relatively-
regular basis, and, the car would be considered as being very 'old' (almost worthless) after it had exceeded 60,000 miles.

BTW, check out the nun, on the far left side of the photo.

If you will notice, there is a Ford Maverick / Comet in the second row there at Glen's
"fine" Used Cars, dating this photo to probably the late 70's. This looks perfectly in
sync with the many similar "car lots" I saw out front of wrecking yards where the yard
owner/s apparently thought they would make better money selling some of their incoming
stock as whole drivers rather than part them out. The lots always seemed to have the
dust and moss covered cars with the missing hubcaps and flat tires like you see here.

I remember hearing a conversation back then where such a yard owner said one of
the reasons to sell cars like this was to generate more parts business as the new owner
of any sold car would be needing to keep the car up.

I have a very similar photo taken out front of a yard in Montana with a charcoal and pink
59 CRL 2HT in about 1982. I wish I had taken more photos of stuff like this.

I, too, am not sure why Neil wants us to look at that nun specifically, but that photo and the '59 Suburban two photos down are from the movie "Lilies of the Field", and that's Sidney Poitier driving the wagon!

Yes, Pete...I was thinking the same thing.

Here's a scene from "Lilies of the Field" - good shots of the car start at about .53 on the video.

Great old movie, BTW.
