Can't blame the seller for trying to cash in on the thing, but I'd be surprised if there's anyone that would pay that. | ||

Elite Veteran Posts: 769 Location: Oley, PA | mstrug - 2017-03-03 5:06 PM It's just the needle! True! but apparently these needles are pretty hard to find. I'm not an expert on these units and I've never owned one, but they are pretty unusual. This article does a nice job of describing their unique design: http://www.capsnews.org/apn2010-2.htm My first thought was that a modern phono stylus could be easily modified to work, but according to the article that is not the case: "The records were cut 550 grooves to the inch (twice that of a standard LP). As one would imagine, because of the incredibly narrow grooves, the stylus required to play the records was tiny. At a quarter-mil, the playback stylus was one-fourth the size of the standard 1-mil monaural LP styluses in place at the time.[vii] The stylus was operated with a pressure of 2 grams. This is one of several reasons that, when Highway Hi-Fi discs are located, they are damaged usually beyond use. Ignoring the warnings on the discs and the sleeves, and playing the discs with a standard stylus, is tantamount to playing a 33 1/3 RPM LP disc with a 78 RPM stylus." Expert Posts: 1357 Location: Iowa USA | It is the cartridge and needle. not just the needle. I have been collecting these for almost 30 years and have never ran across one. I have had NOS needles before and they went pretty high years ago but nowhere near that. I have found NOS complete players for less. darn rare but that will be a stretch I have also contacted needle manufacturers about getting a run made and it is also very cost prohibitive.
