This is the car caught in the fire. I just wanted to share it here because many of us will never have the chance to see a 57/58 Plymouth body without rustthrough.

You can follow the complete transformation of this car into a Christine clone by becoming a member here http://classiccarshop.informe.com/index.php
Then joning the Christine Car Club.

I decided to go ahead and get her main body stripped and off this chassis. The fire damage isn't as bad as it looks and as Arnie would say "After I cleaned up the broken glass it wasn't so bad."

This is where things slow down a bit. The panels that were untouched by fire go quick but the burned areas have to be sanded below the "Black".
According to my Dupont rep as longs ALL of the black is sanded through and there is a layer of epoxy (I use that anyway) then burned metal is fine.
We are lucky that nothing got hot enough to distort. That "Carhart" jacket I thew on not only saved my life when I went back to get her out, It saved her life by allowing me to stand the heat long enough to hook her to the truck.
Carhart Jackets are the sh!t!!!!!

Beautiful work! You really are a true enthusiast - saving the car risking your own life! I don't know any bodyshop/garage owners that would do the same...

Donnie; that is an excellent shot of factory undercoating applied to the body-pan, above where the gas tank got installed.

I understand that the extent to which the GAS tank got an extra measure of undercoating, after the body met the chassis, varied from car-to-car.

Can you post any pics showing the extent of undercoating that this car's gas tank received?

So, the car originally was reverse of the Miss Belvedere ? White on gold ?
And what was that small radiator hanging on firewall for ? It can't be the main radiator...air conditioning?

Thanks guy's, I'm not sure on the gas tank because ths car was put together from many different car's at Big M's yard. The one that was with the car had zero undercoating.

What you are seeing is the heater core on the firewall.

Crap - it's been way too long since I had the box on my '57 Lincoln open (1996, just before she was stolen). That almost looks like one of the gas-fired heater cores - if so, junk that baby PDQ.

Otherwise, I now see why you risked life & limb over such a solid '57 - I know I mentioned it before, but that's the very car that was parked next to the '55 Fireflite Coronado I'm scrimping for in John's yard:

Invaluable pictures you've got there, Donnie !!
I'd like to have a higher resolution version of those pictures if possible ...
Those are invaluable for my bodyman to work on my '58.

That car is in great shape!

But Donnie.. do EVERYONE a favor.. and get that car off those cinder blocks. I can't stand to see a car being held with them, even if it's just a shell. Quality jack stands are an investment. Sorry, a pet peeve of mine.

You do great work!

Thanks again guy's. Yea I dot really like the cinder blocks myself but it will be another couple of months before I have my rotiserie and it was all I could come up withto give me the clearance I need in that position.
I do have them interlocked and what weight is on 'em isn't much. I can pick up the azz end by myself.
I'm sand blasting some hard to get to areas today.

These pictures are after some of the first wave of blasting. I have since done much more but I forgot my camera last time I was in the shop.

My sandblasting is done in a slow fashon. I use kid sandbox play sand on the main body and a low silica sand/glass mix for the tuffer area's, both at 100 psi so not to distort the metal. It's slower but the end result is much beter for the metal.

Donnie, if you want to do something really 'trick' and easy to do: spray some dark gray primer over the P/T
plate-area.

THEN: lay a heavy-thick 3/4" strip of masking tape 'carelessly' across the middle-area (don't go edge-to-edge on it) of the
P/T plate.

Then: just paint the car a la usual, but, after the last top coat is applied, yank-off that masking tape, so that there
is a definite shoulder-area around the periphery of the tape, with that center-area remaining un-painted.

I don't know WHY, but L.A.-built cars aparently had a Broadcast Sheet (or SOMETHING held-onto the P/T plate
with masking tape). The 'sheet' was removed prior to the body painting, but there "always" is clear evidence of that
masking tape remained there, while the car was being painted.

On cars that are re-painted, you can usually see where that masking-tape 'shadow-crater' was/is, on the P/T plate,
if you look closely, at the new-paint.

Been working on her a little. I got bored with blasting and had to make something have some color.

Shot some etching primer and laid down some of the factory type brush on seam sealer for that new stock look. (That's the way it was done then)

Donnie do you sand blast outside, or do you have sosme way of keeping all that sand,
dirt, and rust in one area? It seems like it would really be hard to get a clean, dirt free
paint job after sandblasting in the same shop as you paint in.

I tried sandblasting here once and had such a mess in the driveway! I had sand all over
everywhere for months, not to mention, eyes, nose, ears, hair, and other places ( unmentionable
here ).

Shop vac and a water hose. I also mix some course media with just the sand because it seems to help keep it easy to clean up. I also do it at a lower psi which helps with the spread of the stuff.
The only part of the outer body I blasted was the roof and firewall. The rest I chemical stripped.

Donnie, when you get back to working on Nathan's Coronet, could you post a couple
of pictures of the big piece of chrome potmetal that is at the front of the fin, underneath
the quarter glass and just behind the door opening. I'd like to see how it attaches and
comes off and what I'll have to remove to get it off. Mine needs to be rechromed and
now would be a good time to see how they are removed. Thanks

Well I see you're getting moved in and comfortable in your new

Ok there is a lack of pictres this time out. My wife took a fishing trip with her brother and had the camera in te truck when she left
Blame her! I will forward all bitching notes to her.

Anyway, you missed the getting ready but here is the finished underbody and firewall.

I wanted to go ahead a do the firewall so that the underbody would have the right spatter pattern along the floor/firewall seam.
I'll just mask it up with low stick painters tape and lightweight plastic for the rest of the body job.
The owner didn't want the tape line on the tag.

Too bad about the owner not realizing or appreciating what a correct-detail that dark-black masked-over area on
the P/T plate represents, on a L.A. built car.

Oh well, the red is not original, either, but, if it HAD been OEM, there would have been a masked-off area, across the
middle of the P/T plate.

Nothing really special going on right now. Didn't get to put in as many hours as I had wanted because of finishing up some of the shop's need's.

Anyway, can't tell much in the pictures but I have been massaging out some old bruise's and muscle kinks she has in her hind quarters.

Hey Donnie! Great work on the car thus far. She's coming along and looking awesome! I'm sure the owner is tickled to death with what you're doing.

One question. What paint did you use on the chassis? It looks like gloss Chassis Black that Eastwood sells. Is that a correct assumption?

It is chassis black but it's from Dupont/Nason, which may be the very same paint. Dupont is huge andhas there hand in alot.

Here is the rear end and brakes mounted. (Some touch up needed from where I welded on the AAJ line bracket's)

Exhaust is just free hanging here and that is hy it looks crooked.

Been a while since I posed in this thread.

Everything isn't put together yet but here is how she sits right now. Everything is a bit dusty and needs cleaned of the smudges and such.
The paint colors are waht the owner wants to ease the minds of anyone who wants to point out some of the non-original stuff.

Clive asked me to update this thread so here is where the car is at now.

Christine interior is on the way here. I will be converting the belvedere seats to fury type seats per the owners request. I just finished the new Waxoyl rust proofing undercoat. She had alrady had one type of undercoat put on but we decided it best to get off what would come off easy and then just coat the floor with the Waxoyl.
Engine is a 318. The valve covers are just sitting on there for protection while the others are getting chormed.
A full set of rubber (Everything) as well as all the other bits like firewall pad and trunk cards are here from Gary Goers.

The new fuel line has been fabbed and is in place. The new brake lines are just laid in waiting on a few more parts before the final mounting.
It's been a while since I last updated this so I may have forgot something that had been done.

How did you fix the Passengers side door hinges? That's beyond just a sprung door That alone would be a major nasty repair.
I am just guessing they did that when they pulled it from the building while it was on fire.
I am guessing too that it was the car that caught fire and not the building it was in.

Very nice work by the way!

Thanks

The catch rod/ postion lock wasn't attached on that door and with no front clip the door wiil swing that wide. It did bend the front lip some but I do have a better door to replace it with.

Where she is at right now. Tweeking the main body I found some filler in the drivers rocker panel than had been put ther because of a dent that should have been pulled some before it was filled so that will need to be taken care of but she is coming along nice.
