Location: The Mile High City | Hi, Nick - Do you know what the paint code is on that silver (for example, Toreador Red is O, Jet Black is A...)? If you look at the order sheets, they do not show the silver or its code because silver was added later. The silver specials used it sometimes and I have see pictures of one Belvedere sport coupe that was painted silver. Thanks, Mike Gorgeous car! Edited by Lancer Mike 2011-02-15 2:16 PM

Not exactly true based solely on the black plates. The California DMV didn't start issuing those until 1963 (if you were to peel all the registration stickers off the upper right-hand corner you would see "63" embossed into the metal.) The original plates on this car from '58 would be the old yellow ones with black letters. But I'd bet you're right about it being an original California car anyway. H.

Veteran Posts: 279 Location: Norway | The car has had one owner before Nick and has been in San Francisco all its life. In my eyes a nice original four door sedan is just as interesting as a red hardtop or convertible. For one I like the way they are more representative of what ordinary people drove back then. They have also survived in less numbers and finding a really nice sedan isn't that easy. This particular car being a four door Silver Special is actually pretty rare too, they made more Furys

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | I wonder if, in 1963, the State made everyone physically surrender their existing plates to their local DMV, when they received their new black-plates, or, whether the State merely mailed out the new black plates to everyone re-registering his car. CA had been (economically) providing year-stickers for the various license plates which were being used, between 1957-1962. Some states, like OH & IL, mailed out new plates every year, so, maybe that is what CA did, as well, and let everyone dispose of his previous plates as he saw fit to do.
