Hi, is there a way to verify if a 1959 Dodge was originally D500 or Super D500 versus a car that had that option added later?
Also, what are all of the attributes of these options versus the standard engine?
Hopefully there is a 1959 Dodge Custom Royal lancer out there somewhere just waiting to find its way into my garage. And if it is a D500, all the better!

Thanks, Joel

The 1959 Dodge D500 option has order code 373; Super D500 option – order code 374.
Those codes should be printed on the built sheets.
If the car has not a sheet, you may find needful code on the cowl tag under the hood.
No code – no factory D500 option.

Firstly, you need to find the Serial Number of the car. 1959 Dodge has 10-digit VIN:

1st position – Model Year:

M – 1959;

2nd position – Division of Chrysler Corporation:

3 – Dodge;

3rd position – Model:

1 – Coronet V8
3 – Royal V8
5 – Custom Royal V8
7 – Sierra Wagons V8
9 – Police Pursuit Cars V8

4th position – Assembly Plant:

2 – Hamtramck, Detroit, Michigan
4 – Los Angeles, California
5 – Newark, Delaware
9 – Windsor, Ontario, Canada

So, if you want to have a Custom Royal Lancer in your garage, the VIN of your car will be starting at M35…

The Hamtramck Plant broadcast sheet and cowl tag – the fourth VIN character is “2”, i.e. M352xxxxxx for Custom Royal.
Find the column 37 “POWER PLANTS” on the sheet with printed “3” above, or see at the 8th column from the left in the middle row on the cowl tag.
It is “36” with “3” stamped below. Each of these tells this is D500.

No mistake to “36” on the data plate. The tag code 363 means order code 373. Those are different things.

The Canadian Windsor Plant cowl tag – the fourth VIN character is “9”, i.e. M359xxxxxx for Custom Royal.
No broadcast sheet picture, unfortunately.
You may find the cowl tag near right hood hinge, but no info about D500 on it.
In this case the broadcast sheet only will help you.

The Canadian cowl data tags are the worst. Bill W (Chrycoman) was good at interpreting them but in reality, they really don't contain much info.
