Something that really gets me is the way these goofs at EPAY describe anything.....everything 'fits' everything else and they expect us to be impressed with garbage like they put in the header for this Plymouth: 1955 PLYMOUTH BELVEDERE 1955 PLYMOUTH BELVEDERE CORONET GTX HEMI CLASSIC MUSCLE ANTIQUE CAR BELAIR WOW!! This is a complete and utter insult to people in the know......I will NEVER use them to advertise or buy anything.....if I want to buy I research the seller and go directly to them.......

I thought that I was going crazy when I counted 4 cells (x 2 = 8V). I had never heard of such an animal. Could have used that back in the Prairies during -40C/F winters with my 55 Dodge Regent.

Ebay is a complete mess. But the 'hack' you can use to get around the 'FITS' nonsense is to add '-fits' to the end of your search. No space between the hyphen and the word. Ron

Expert Posts: 4043 Location: Connecticut | The wiring is old and crusty. So the owner took the lazy route and installed an 8V battery, rather than rewiring the ignition/starting system. Also, the battery cables are not correct for a 6V system. Ron

Expert Posts: 3155 Location: NY & VT | Yes it should have been repaired properly. Sticking in an 8V battery was a trick commonly used even back in the day with older cars and tractors in cold climates until everyone switched over to 12V systems, mostly around 1956 (in cars). It doesn't really harm anything, but not the "right" way to do things. Must say the "lake" pipes look stupid on a '55 4 dr granny car. Edited by firedome 2020-12-23 9:57 AM

Member Posts: 18 Location: Golden, CO | In the mid sixties I bought my first car, a well-used 53 Dodge Coronet V8. It was always hard starting, so I replaced the 6-volt battery with an 8-volt. They were commonly used in combines, so were readily available in farm country. From then on it would turn over like a champ, even on the coldest days. It did create one problem, however. One moonless night about 2 am, I was leaving work for home. I often liked to announce my departure, revving the little 241 Red Ram hemi as I travelled between tall buildings, dual glass packs reverberating. As I eased onto the highway, I came upon a slow moving car. Wanting to get home quickly after a long day's work, I dropped my car a gear and flew by him. Then, all the exterior lights on my car blew. With no way to see, I dropped behind the other car and followed him until I needed to turn off the highway, then literally felt my way home along several miles of rock and dirt surfaced roads. Moral of the story is that an 8-volt battery in a 6-volt system can cause problems. The same thing happened about a year later, but under less exciting circumstances. By the way, I now own an original 53 Coronet convertible, still with its 6-volt system. I found that having the correct gauge new battery cables is a better solution.
