Expert 5K+ Posts: 7417 Location: northern germany | Past weekend I went saturday night cruising in the small town Gifhorn 40 miles away, just like I did in my youth, maybe for the final time. Boy, times are changing! Am I still in Germany? Don't think that I saw a single non Arab/African that night. Fortunately that heavenly old gas station from the 50s was still there and I took some pictures. Note the sign FONZY(!)kowska Grabmale (gravestones). Had to ad a pic of my car in the MCD drive-in parking lot. Always love how my little relic looks in a see of junk. This is the famous Tulsa Gold Drller Statue In front of the International Petroleum Exhibition Building on the Tulsa Fairgrounds. I frst saw it in February 2006 when I did a trial run to Tulsa in preparation for the unearthinng of Miss Belvedere the next year (2007) There was a car show going on in the building at the time, so that was a nice bonus. Elite Veteran Posts: 1172 Location: Georgia | I finally had the chance last weekend to take a little road trip in my '61 Plymouth wagon to south Georgia to the small town of Alma. There is a bank there that is from the space age, a true mid-century relic, that is a perfect setting for a photo shoot. Apparently there was a twin structure to this one in Sylvester, GA, that was torn down years ago. I apologize for the the number of photos, but I couldn't narrow it down to just a few! Enjoy. Elite Veteran Posts: 769 | Was planning a day to take the 61 out and take a few pics. I was remembering where some still standing surviving relic places were just a year ago and to my surprise they were GONE. This one mini golf sign in particular was removed against the still functioning vintage roadside mini golf owners will. The city should have protected it as a landmark. Instead they sold it off to be resold by a dealer. The city also has a very large abandoned MOTEL sign that want torn down as blight. I think these things add to the charm as a old downtown! Here is a pic of the sign. https://www.lakesiderelicsandantiques.com/product-page/1950-s-huge-p... Edited by Apollo 61 2019-09-24 1:07 PM

Elite Veteran Posts: 769 | I then drove to my next stop where there was a very cool old time gas station still standing only to find it GONE recently. It still had the diamond shaped sliding front garage door. It also had the multi square pane Windows un broken. I would have liked to dismantle this station and rebuild it in my backyard as a shop. Here's a pic of what I found of it be demolished. Edited by Apollo 61 2019-09-24 3:40 PM Attachments ---------------- image.jpeg (25KB - 228 downloads) image.jpeg (16KB - 223 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9697 Location: So. Cal | I know what you mean. You better get to them quick because they are disappearing fast. They even tore down an old rock gas station on Rt 66 in the middle of nowhere because it was in disarray. What does it matter if it is in the middle of nowhere? Just leave it alone or rebuild it. A large street near my new work is called DeSoto street. When I first started working here last year I found that there was an old '50's pharmacy right on DeSoto called DeSoto Pharmacy. They even still have the old soda shoppe inside it and still serve fountain drinks & ice cream floats etc. - right in the middle of a modern drug store. I stopped by and bought lunch there a couple times and the soda shoppe area had numerous senior citizens who drove for hours just to experience the old style place again. Unfortunately, the San Fernando "valley" went down hill since the time it was built and they weren't making enough on drug sales so they shut it down within 3 months that I found it. I was waiting for a convenient time to go just before dusk in the summer when I could get a good shot of my Coronet there without a ton of other cars around. But I didn't do it fast enough. Now it's gone and no possibility to take a shot with my DeSoto in front of it either. The guy who ran the soda shoppe inside it talked of starting it up again somewhere else, but hasn't yet, as far as I know. I don't think it would be the same in a new building either. Elite Veteran Posts: 769 | NICE pic. Old theaters make for great backgrounds in relic pics.. For about 15 years I worked in the movie theater salvage business. I would remove, refurbish, reinstall movie theater seats, projectors, speakers, popcorn machines, etc. I must have stripped out 25 theaters over time. My favorite part when going into a old closed theater was relic hunting. I have a collection of vintage posters, exit signs, marquee letters, film reels, film, trailers etc. I also have a bunch drive in theater intermission trailers. I need to figure a way to transfer 35mm to DVD. I used to run a vintage single screen theater about 10 miles from big m auto. While looking for pics of the theater I came across website that some you might want to checkout about roadside relics. http://www.roadarch.com/roadside.html

(I just transferred over from Milford) from the 1991 movie Sometimes they come back. I had a very rare theater release poster for this movie that never made into theaters and went straight to video instead.? It's a Not very well know movie made by Stephen King. If you like Christine you like this movie. Check out this vid. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=sometimes+they+come+back+milfor...

Cool pics John, I had a great time running that theater. The basement was and still is chocked with relics. When mike closed we had a gathering and watched for the last time 35mm film drive in trailers, vintage 60s70s movie trailers, and even a Wiliams CA Sundown drive in trailer! I called you,but you were out of town. Somehow if we could figure a way to play the film off the side of your barn?!?!

Elite Veteran Posts: 1172 Location: Georgia | On a recent road trip to Tennessee, I snapped a few photos of interest: First, the DeSoto Theater in Rome, Georgia. I know, it's a Plymouth, but hey! lol Second, a cool structure in Hixson, Tennessee. One of the gentlemen there said the building was originally a Shoney's Big Boy Restaurant in the 1950s!
