Location: The Mile High City | 62 years ago today! Inanimate objects don't have birthdays, but what the heck: Happy birthday old De Soto (approximately how it might have looked back then)! It spent the day tucked away in the garage; rain and cold here in Denver. Expert Posts: 1287 | Mike -- Why don't you celebrate your car's birthday in grand style? On January 19, 2007 (its 50th birthday), I took MD2 down I-25 near PPIR (Pikes Peak International Raceway to all you flatlanders) and I think I nudged the the peg on its 150 MPH speedometer. I know, it's an old speedo, but with a slight downgrade and a light tailwind, I may have gotten an honest 140 or so out of it on a long straight. You might get close to the 120 mark on your DeSoto. I must admit 120+ is not as much fun in the C as it is in my '65 Corvette with the top down, but while the old 327 Fuelie has the same 375 horses as the 392 C and is about a half a ton lighter, it has a 3.70 rear end versus the C's 3.36. That big ol' Chrysler is just made for high speed cruising while the Vette has more of its element on a winding mountain road or a dragstrip. My two Plymmers ('60 and '65) just have 120 speedometers and pose no challenge. Joe Godec '57 Chrylser 300C, '60 Fury Sonoramic, '65 Fuelie Vette, '65 Sport Fury 426-S/4-speed

Expert Posts: 3155 Location: NY & VT | HBD a few days late! Love what you've done with this car over time Mike including the funky add-ons that make it yours. Did it come with that single side trim? Much as I like the side color sweeps I really like that plain style too...it's rare to see! Edited by firedome 2019-12-13 11:50 AM

Location: The Mile High City | Thanks fellas. Roger, my car is coded PPP and should have been solid Holly Red. It is now red with a white sweep and I think the second owner made it that way. I think I recall him saying he got all the trim to do it. The above image is a photoshop of what it may have looked like. I don't really know if it would have had just the single stainless trim piece or the full set. I think I've gone a bit overboard with the geegaws, but I do really like that '51 hood ornament! It may have had just a front fender antenna instead of the dual antennae in the back.
Joe, I wonder how fast that car might be able to go! 120 seems like it would be a big stretch. I have driven it all over, but I think I'd be scared spitless at that speed.

Expert Posts: 1287 | Mike -- I've not driven any of the current bunch extremely fast for any great length of time, just lonely bursts on a fairly empty road just to see what they can do. As I said, I was just able to nudge the 150 mark on the C and then backed down. The Vette has a 160 speedo, but with 3.70 gears and the aerodynamic lift problem on its front end make a speed like that impossible. Actually, the indicated 150 I got with it was not for real either and may have been more like 140-145. But blowing by some flatland "touristers" at a "good" speed certainly surprised them and, like the old "Hot Rod Lincoln" song, those telephone poles going past looking like a picket fence is just fascinating. But I'm not as bad as when I was young. In 1965, when I was in grad school in Albuquerque, I had asked a certain honey blond a question a couple of weeks before and I was anxious to get her answer. In view of that, I drove the '65 Sport Fury I had then from my apartment there to my dad's house in Pueblo in a hurry. That is a distance of about 310 miles and I covered it in just under three hours. But it was worth it because 54 years ago next week she put on that ring and its been on since. Interestingly, the best I ever remember doing with that '60 Fury I had back in 1960-1964 was about 95 and that was on the strip at Castle Rock's Continental Divide Raceway (CDR). That was its top end as I was into dragging then and it had 4.10 gears. Your DeSoto is a very nice car -- one to be admired. Don't push it unless your comfortable. I'm just trying to return to the days of my misspent youth. Joe

Veteran Posts: 110 Location: Falcon, CO | My 1957 Dodge Coronet turned 63 today. I've owned it since 1978, so it has been with me for a while! By the way, the FCA Production Record says that it was manufactured in 1955, but that is a typo (as well as the city in which it was originally sold). Don H.
