Regular Posts: 85 | My 57 Dodge D 500 oil pressure gauge drops at idle and returns when the car is under way. Is this normal or do I have a weak oil pump? If I need an oil pump, is it located on the engine external or internal ? thanks Bob

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9911 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Sounds normal, at least once the engine is warmed up. The oil pump is internal to the engine and is driven off the camshaft. It rotates relative to engine speed: as the engine RPMs go up, so does the rotation of the oil pump (which is likely a gear pump) and therefore the pressure it creates goes up. On initial start up, when the oil is thickest, the idle pressure should be high but as the oil heats up and becomes thinner, the idle oil pressure will drop. So unless your pressures are really low (you'd need to post photos of your gauge in action), nothing to worry about. Expert Posts: 1740 Location: Alaska | As mentioned, it is normal for the oil pressure to be lower at idle but you don't say what the gauge is actually reading. i don't have the number before me but the factory has a minimum recommended pressure. You should maybe check with a gauge on the engine where the line comes out of the block. It is possible the pump is worn or there are loose clearances in the bearings if it is very low at idle.

Expert Posts: 1207 Location: Ponder, TX | I bought a new '68 Plymouth 318 and for years the oil light always went out at start-up. Then one time I installed a Motorcraft filter and the light always came on dimly at idle. I was approaching 100,000 miles and becoming concerned, but then I went back to my usual filter brand and it never happened again. No, I'm not an expert on filters, oiling systems, or anything else for that matter, but that's one experience. As long as the needle doubles the visual travel at highway speed, or the light goes off quickly at start-up, I've never worried about it and I've never had an engine failure from low pressure, and I've never had to replace a pump, though I always do when rebuilding an engine.
