Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13054 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Last summer I noticed that the starter missed once - not good, so total teardown and checks. First of all, all parts carefully cleaned according to the fsm. Normally, I start with polishing up the commutator in the lathe with emery cloth for to have a clean even surface for the tests. Thereafter I test the shaft for runout - 1st photo, 0,02mm (0,0005") Next I test the commutator for runout - 2nd photo, 0,03mm (0,0015") The armature is tested for ground - 3rd photo, no problems The armature is tested for short - 4th photo, no problems Then the commutator is undercut with a modified saw blade - 5th photo. Finally, the commutator is polished again in the lathe. Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13054 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | The reson for that the starter whined and missed once last summer seems to be that the splines for the drive on the shaft dried out - no grease left. The bushings are totally ok. Next step will be the solonoid, pictures will follow. It's amazing that the starter is in excellent shape after next to 60 years of age - they knew how to make quality stuff back then.

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13054 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | I made a tool for to carefully demount and mount the snap ring - 6th and 7th photo. I also made a brush-holder ring out of soft plastic for easy assembling of the starter - 8th and 9th photo. Now the starter is preassembled, awaiting the solenoid - 10th and 11th photo. The contact plate and washer new NOS aftermarket - 13th photo. The starter ready for mounting - 14th and 15th photo. Expert Posts: 2196 Location: Muskego, WI | My factory starter for my '56 Imperial is the same (or very similar), but I need a new solenoid and linkage to actually kick the starter gear out. Do you know where these parts can be sourced? I have been using the starter on my friends 1954 Dodge 240 hemi that we run on a stand occasionally, I have to pull the lever back by hand to engage the starter.
