You see guys dragging in junk from a field with half gone due to rust and they say it's worth $15,000. That's fine for TV, but when I see any vehicle that has been sitting out in the elements for decades...it's most likely junk for good.

I would normally agree with you but here are a couple of exceptions that sold last weekend (I'm even more sorry that these aren't Forward Look): https://www.proxibid.com/Collector-Cars/Classic-Vintage-Cars/RARE-19... https://www.proxibid.com/Collector-Cars/Classic-Vintage-Cars/RARE-19...

Looks like some Murray bikes with other brands. One has a springer fork I like with truss rod rack. Edited by ChristineFury 2018-08-30 6:43 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7808 Location: Williams California | I had to deliver a '52 Dodge truck to Phoenix, and since this auction was only 800 miles from there, decided to check it out. There were two '59 Chrysler sedans, a '58 Windsor sedan, all three had factory A/C. '60 Plymouth Belv. 2-door HT, '58 Savoy 4-door sedan, several '55-6 Ply 4-door sedans, a pretty decent '61 Imperial 4-door, a '60 Imp. 2-door HT with swivel seats, '59 Dodge Royal 4-door sedan, 2- '59 Plymouth 4-door sedans, '57 Firesweep 2-door HT Probably a few others I couldn't remember off the top of my head. Bidding was ferocious, a '59 Cadillac hearse went for $39,000, had some rust, but overall decent, a '59 Chevy stepside pickup involved a bidding war between two local farm families, it drew $27,000, and the '57 Firesweep pulled a high bid of $14,000. Crazy prices! I did manage to get the '58 Savoy for under $1,000, and there were other deals as well on similar Chrysler sedans, but cheapest shipper I could find on short notice was $1,000 per car with a 2-car minimum. Looked like everything received bids, and no scrappers were present. ---John (DSCN6950.JPG) Attachments ---------------- DSCN6950.JPG (124KB - 116 downloads)

Bench seat, manual brakes, missing trim, and not even that solid. Insanity if you ask me.... ~PeterDid anyone see what the 58 Desoto went for? Probably because it was an auction. Auctions are very good at getting people to shell out more money for things than they would otherwise. Theres a deadline, so people get into a "This is my only chance! Once it's gone it's gone!" mentality. Auctions also bring out the competitiveness in people and nobody likes losing; it's not really a game, but it feels like one. There's an audience too, which enhances the feeling of competitiveness because people don't want to be 'the loser' in front of anyone. Its also an in person sale, which lets the auctioneers tug at the emotions of the buyers and sell the cars like a good used car salesman. They can convince people that "This is YOUR car! Are you really going to let the other guy win?! When was the last time you saw one of these for sale?! That rust is totally minor, especially for a guy like you! I bet you could fix it in a weekend! You could sell it for twice as much fixed up! You'll be the center of attention everywhere you drive this!" At least that's my take. Was it worth $14250? Well, yes, because someone paid that much! I wouldn't pay that much for that car, but to each his own. The important thing is that it's not sitting out in a field rotting anymore. Hopefully whoever bought it will restore it.

Elite Veteran Posts: 630 Location: Lubbock, TX | mikes2nd - 2018-09-21 5:18 PM Classic fwl.net response.... Omg I would give 1000$! For it! Oh whatever, get off your darn high horse. I was simply offering an educated first-hand impression of the condition and value of the car. I just picked up a #3 condition 1959 Firesweep 2dr hardtoprunning and driving for $16k, so for me a parts car sitting in a field is a reasonable buy around $4500-7000 if you REALLY want one. Prices at this auction were driven up by rich oil money and family squabbles that created bidding wars. I'm the LAST person here who believes all Forward Look cars should cost pennies; and being a certified Classic Auto Appraiser, I usually tend to believe I'm pretty well informed, but please, go ahead and belittle my educated opinion. Who knows, maybe you'll singlehandedly drive another member from this forum... Edited by CaprockClassics 2018-09-21 7:16 PM

Oh whatever, get off your darn high horse. this wasnt really directed at you per say Its just these old timers here are having sticker shock all the time... "I member back in the day you could buy that car for 500$!, i wouldnt give you more than 100$!"... is their typical response. Was that car overpriced? even i will say yes :) like wow overpriced but who knows why it went that high. Seems these cars can get up there with enough competition and advertising.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7808 Location: Williams California | I was prepared to spend $3500 on the Firesweep, as it would cost another $1,000 to get it home. I've been to so many auctions, I do not get "auction fever" and go nuts bidding against someone else even when the value of the item is surpassed. There were two local families bidding against each other on a '59 Chevy Apache stepside pickup, apparently it belonged to a family member at one time, and was bid over $27,000. #5 condition!! ---John

Veteran Posts: 206 Location: California | Its funny the mentality of people in the classic car circle. They'll pay $14k for a car like that and let a nice car like the 59 Desoto 4drht on ebay with an asking price of $24k sit there for months. The 57 would require so much more money(20-30K) to bring it up to the 59's level. I'm pretty much done buying projects. I have too many and probably will never get to them all.

Yeah the classic car market is really finicky. Those styling changes in 59 really affected the collectability (except maybe with Imperial). Don't get me wrong, the 59's are still really cool in my opinion, but I understand why people like the 57-58's so much more.

Yeah, the hearse's are rare since they were basically thrown out like other 'work cars', but it's a hearse. Not many people really want a hearse to take to cruise nights. Don't get me wrong, that price he paid is probably what it's worth to someone who collects hearses and other professional cars, but the people willing to pay that price are few and far between.
