Member Posts: 34 Location: Sioux Falls, SD | Assuming my transmission oil cooler isn't leaking in the stock cooler or antifreeze getting into the trans lines. (1956 354 with factory cast iron heat exchanger on water pump) So let's say it goes wrong. I'm assuming these are 5/16ths lines so for the road I'd like to have an emergency repair kit where I can block off the connection to the cooler and put in a loop. But to be better prepared any reason not to just put in a small oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator? I did some searches and couldn't find anyone talking about this as most of the years after already has this built into the radiator.. Another idea if I get this radiator serviced I suppose an expert could add a cooler to the lower tank or just replace the radiator.. Just some ideas to see what others have done successfully. I live in a cold climate state (South Dakota).. Thanks..

The coolant/fluid heat exchanger will cool the fluid in the summer and warm it in the winter.

Member Posts: 34 Location: Sioux Falls, SD | Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. But incase I verify it's leaking is that line 5/16ths if you know? I don't have the car here and the book doesn't say. I want to get parts for a emergency bypass incase needed.

I think that you are talking about the transmission oil cooler like the one on the front of this Desoto hemi (below): I believe that I still have the one in the second photo and could measure the threads, etc. it that would help: REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=73659&... This way the extra oil cooler will cool down the fluid and the original cooler will give the fluid a lower but not to cool temp. In generally warmer ambient, from the transmission, through the original cooler, to the extra cooler and back to the transmission. I have the later set-up on my 60 Saratoga here in Sweden due to mostly spring/summer/autumn driving.

You can also pressure test it. If there is heavy rust inside, or if it fails the pressure test, get another one in better shape.

Member Posts: 34 Location: Sioux Falls, SD | You know that's a good idea and there are thermostats for these coolers which regulate the opening of the external filter above a certain temp.. I'll consider that, Thanks! wizard - 2022-01-26 7:23 AM You can install an extra oil cooler, for generally colder weather; From the transmission to the extra oil cooler, to the original cooler then back to the transmission. Member Posts: 34 Location: Sioux Falls, SD | Thanks 56D500boy, If it's 5/16's I have parts here for that.. Your photo seems like that is correct but I can't get anyone to look at my car to check. (The car's in Vegas while I'm in Sioux Falls).. I am just trying to get stuff ready for April when I show up with a ton of parts, tools and spares. Hopefully that lower hose is something standard I can cut from local autoparts supply as needed.
