Looking for 3.55 or 3.73 gears for my 1960 Plymouth. Rear end is stock tapered axle Mopar 8 3/4, so that is what I'm looking for.

Thanks.

I have a set of 3.31 and 3.91. Right in-between what you are looking for. But by the way, you can use a set of '60's gears if you want. The only difference is that the spacer in the middle is shorter on the older versions. So all you would need to do to use the newer gear set is:

1. Shorten the axles by 1/8", which just so happens to be the depth of the chamfer on them. So that makes it easy to tell how much to take off. You can also cut them slowly and trial fit them so that you can make the lengths perfect for the shims that you want to use.

Or

2. Take out the carrier from the gear set and remove the spacer from the spider gears, and then shorten it by 1/8" on each end. If you have an extra one from an older gear set, you could just swap them from one to the other. Then put it all back together. If you mark where everything was torqued to, you can usually get it back together without having to reset the backlash. But otherwise, you will need to reset the backlash with a needle gauge afterward, which isn't difficult to figure out.

PowerFlite, thanks for the info, but I'm looking for something that I can just swap in without modification and I know that most people tend to ditch there tapered axle setups anyway. I have some late 60s differentials, but they are all 3.23 and 2.76 geared and I can use those in my Imperial.

PowerFlite,

After re-reading your post, this makes a lot of sense. Shortening the axles will allow me to use my later 742 and 489 gear sets that I already have? Then I could interchange gears with both of my cars. The tapered axles have the same spline count as the later flanged axles?

Exactly. The only problem is that you can't go back to the older gear sets if you want to go back unless you swap the center pins in the 3rd members. But I have very little selection in the older sets and a lot of the newer gear sets so that is what I did. Now I can swap in any newer gear set that I want. And I shortened them with a grinder, believe it or not. Just keep an eye on that chamfer to ensure that you are cutting it evenly. When the chamfer is gone, you are there. But I went slow at the end so that I wouldn't end up with a thick shim required when I didn't have any to use.
