Just found an old Bring A Trailer auction for probably one of Joe Perry's 56 Dodges, this one an LA built D500. When got to the final of 200 photos, I nearly cried.

The car probably had a body-off restoration and repaint but the painter failed to mask off the cowl tag, losing "valuable" information and provenance.

This is criminal (in my humble opinion)

Starting with my LA-built 56 Dodge D500's cowl tag with no extra paint and showing the characteristic original masking tape mark (that held the paper build sheet to the cowl)

Then two of the BAT D500. I can't read very much from the tag. I could guess but....:(

Yeah. Hard to read, to say the least. They should have used paint stripper to remove the old paint before painting. Also, it looks like they used modern, one-way screws to attach the plate. Sheesh !

Unfortunately this one is as far as you can get from that ... and getting worse by the day.

Can you post another photo of a data plate held on by these screws ? IMHO, this type of screw did not exist before the 1980s.

Ron and Ralph: Look at the annotated image above of my LA-built (May 56) Dodge's cowl data tag. They used the one-way security screws on mine. So it was a 1956 LA factory thing, not some amateur
restoration shop.

And speaking of amateur, after seeing that over over over painted cowl data tag, I was surprised to see that the VIN tag had been masked off professionally.

My 1960 Chrysler 300F has these screws holding the license plate light on. Same with my '60 NY parts car. The trunk lock is right above the light.

My LA-plant 1956 Dodge cowl date plate with the "security" screws. Photo was from the first week I owned the car in Sept 2016.

I think it was only the Los Angeles CA plant that used that security screw type?  One of my '58 Dodges had them.  Hamtramck built cars used the regular phillips head screws.  I'm not sure about Windsor and Newark.
