Anyone say what causes6 volt headlights to blow when turning on lights ?

Have you had a good look at your wiring? Mine was all frayed at the switch and was shorting out. It was definitely worth it, in my mind, to switch my '55 over to 12V negative ground.

Welcome to the board.

You need to take a voltage reading at the battery when the engine is running; an incorrectly adjusted or faulty voltage regulator will cause an over-volt condition which will burn out lamps. The standard charging voltage for a 6-volt system is 7.2 volts but the lamps will usually tolerate up to 8 volts.
