Veteran Posts: 123 Location: Boise, ID | I just took my gas tank to get cleaned out. It turned out to be in good shape, even the fuel sending unit. The only problem is the last person who replaced the fuel sender sealed it up with silicone which the gas ate away. Does anyone know where I can get the correct O-ring for this, or something else that would serve the same purpose? Thanks, Brendan.

Elite Veteran Posts: 977 Location: Sydney, Australia | Pulling up this old thread. Has anyone fitted a new sender seal in a 58 Plymouth or maybe other 57-59 FL. I noticed when I took my sender out someone had used an o-ring that was cut to size. When I went on the net to find a new one I noticed that there were 2 different ones for the same model cars. Postage for any of the fitting sender seals from the US to Aus was $15 - $40 which is ridiculous. If I can use a correct size o-ring or even cut some flat rubber, that would be more viable. Can I just use an ordinary round sided o-ring? If so does it have to be the thick style?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9912 Location: Lower Mainland BC | I recently (Sept) had my 56 Dodge CR fuel tank restored and chemically lined. As a result, the fuel sender was removed - which gave me a chance to fix the cork floats. I bought a new "O"-ring to re-install the sender but when I did so, I didn't like the fit. So I reused the original square cross-section rubber "O" ring, adding a very small amount of a blue RTV silcone sealant that is supposedly compatible with fuel. So far to good.

The closest I could find was not close enough so I just re-used the original square cross-section ring with a smear of blue RTV on both sides. Worked. YMMV

Elite Veteran Posts: 977 Location: Sydney, Australia | My problem is that someone has used a cut o-ring to do the job but it doesn't seal 100%. The only thing I can do is to use verniers and try to get a measurement by the groove.. Sorry I meant any measurements of your old seal but I might try a couple of different things.
