Member Posts: 32 Location: Ottawa, Canada | I was wondering if a 12volt brake light (let's say) socket, if polarity reversed, would work in a 6v system, with a 6v bulb? Or even, will 12v bulbs work ina 6v system?

That is taken care of when it is installed in the wiring harness, ( soldered to the wires. ) A 12 volt bulb will work in a 6 volt system. It just won't be very bright as it is working at half of it's design voltage. Use a 6 volt bulb in a 6 volt system like intended.

You will, however, have other things which will need to be changed...but not the wiring or sockets...

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9911 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Now that my 56 CR D500 is running and stopping, I am starting in on fixing little things, like I only have one back-up light. The wire for the left one is lying loose. So I checked the right side (which is working) and figured out the problem with the left side is that it is missing a little ceramic disc with the single bulb terminal connection. How likely am I to find a NOS one? *OR* what is the MacGyver solution? On a related note, I see that the tail/stop/signal light has a bakelite two pin "disc" with a keyway. Am I going to find these anywhere? It's the little things now. Oh boy.

Thanks so much for those links. Not sure what I will be able to find equivalent in Canada but at least now I have hope. 55's are 6V positive ground. 56s are 12V negative ground. Thanks again for the leads (pun not quite intended).

Am I going to find these anywhere? ;) I have decided to convert the seldom used back-up lights on my 56 Custom Royal to extra tail/stop/signal lights. To this end, I need two proper OE bulb holders. I bought aftermarket sockets but they do not push the bulb out close to the lens. What I need is this: (TaillightSocket.jpg) Attachments ---------------- TaillightSocket.jpg (166KB - 201 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9681 Location: So. Cal | I faced the same situation as you. You don't need to swap out those sockets. You can use them as is, and still accomplish what you intend to do. Just do the same thing I did with my '58 Desoto bulbs. By using power diodes, you can isolate the 2 inputs to send into a single filament bulb. The resistor will decrease the intensity for the driving lights. But you need to use LED's to reduce the current draw. This setup works really well and you can solder them inline so you can hardly tell anything is different from looking at it. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=60274&... Expert 5K+ Posts: 9911 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Powerflite: Thanks for the diagram and the link. Nice to know that someone else likes more tail light wattage than stock than just me. I am still going to go with Plan A, i.e. OE 2 filament 1641744 sockets (IF I can find them). If I can't, your solution will be Plan B. Edited by 56D500boy 2016-12-19 5:14 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9911 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Thanks Marc I bought some lenses from AJ at Taillight King. Never thought about sockets (I think I thought that the aftermarket sockets I bought would work - they won't). Now I need to measure the hole size and the required extension that I need.

The one(s) I am looking for have an extension of about 5/8". I've contacted AJ at taillightking.com to see if he has something between the 1/2" and 1" extension that show up on his website (that you linked me to (THANKS)) These ones are looking like 1 1/4" or more?
