Expert Posts: 1479 Location: Pacific Northwest | Some of you may have seen this already over on the facebook but I wanted to post it here as well. Brought this home over the weekend and I was pleasantly surprised by my ebay purchase. I conversed with the seller during the auction and was comfortable with buying the car without seeing it in person first. After the auction I spoke with Ron on the phone and asked if he thought the car would make it back to Seattle. He assured me that it would and even encouraged me to make the trip. My wife and I flew into Vegas and caught a bus down to Ron's place. He came and picked us up in his 1962 300 Sport and took the "scenic" route back home. As much as I would have liked to hang around and talk cars we need to get on the road to ensure we would get back in time for work. Fairly uneventful drive. Had a bit of a scare at the first gas stop. I thought I had blown the radiator when it was just a pressure burp of the system. I think the car sat for a while with mostly water in the system and possibly a clogged overflow. I flushed the radiator three time at the gas station, poured in the gallon of coolant I bought before we left and never had a problem the rest of the way. Stayed off the interstates and followed hwy 395 all the way up till Susanville when we decided to make a break for home. The only other problem we had was around that time the ball and trunnion went wonky and we got a nasty vibration right in the sweet spot, between 62 and 70 MPH. So 71+ it was as much as we could. After a bit of research I am thinking I've got myself an oddball car. Perhaps quite rare. For those of you who don't know the car is a 1961 Dodge Dart Pioneer D500. 361 HP 4bbl. Manual steering, manual brakes and three on the tree. No options. The car came from Richard Rowlands private collection and I was told was one of his favorites. He and his brother Ron were going to restore the car before he succumbed to cancer at the age of 52. I was told by a close friend of mine that he tried to buy the car back in 2005 and Richard politely declined. I heard the car came out of Washington and was owned by a gentleman named Sean Machado who I have contacted and was informed that he has some pictures of when he bought it, unmolested. He sold it to a guy named Dave who I was told repainted the car and redid the interior. Richard I assume added the bumper guard, map light, radio, antenna and remote mirror. Most of which I will remove. I sent away for the IBM card and info from Chrysler historical today so I will keep you all abreast of what I find out. I saw here that there were 80 D500 Dodge ram cars built in 1961. I wonder how many were D500's without the ram intake? Expert Posts: 1479 Location: Pacific Northwest | 12" brakes confirmed with the use of a tape measure. 5.5 Leaves in the rear springs. Gotta get under the car and see which torsion bars are present. I'm wondering if all the 361 4bbl engines were stamped with the HP? Mine reads: 36 (361) HP (something special or standard Dart D-500) 10 28 (Oct. 28th) Edited by ABloch 2016-04-18 9:31 PM

Extreme Veteran Posts: 417 Location: Bräcke,Sweden | " I'm wondering if all the 361 4bbl engines were stamped with the HP?" Thats a nice Dodge you got there. I`ve checked my 361 and it`s stamped R36 and 6-2 so not all 361`s had the HP stamping. But mine is a 2 BBL. Edited by polara61 2016-04-20 3:27 AM

But mine is a 2 BBL. if yours is the 2bbl polara 361 its the regular, non d500, engine and shouldn't have a HP stamping. all 383/361 60/61 short wheelbase cars should have a HP stamping.

I hope one or both of these can be seen at a MoPar show this year. How do you know which county they are for? These plates came on my 300F. The guy told me they were the originals but in the paperwork was the YOM application. (plate.jpg) Attachments ---------------- plate.jpg (97KB - 186 downloads)

Extreme Veteran Posts: 340 Location: Tacoma, WA | I'm not an expert, but there are license plate collector sites that have this information, and even the WA DOL site lists the information. I think "S" would typically be Kittitas Co., like where Ellensburg is. I thought the F you're getting is from farther north, but I don't remember. http://staff.washington.edu/islade/counties/index.htm http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/sphistory.html
