Hi All,

I'm the proud new owner of a 56 Plymouth Custom Suburban 4 dr with the 27? V8 and a powerflight trans. thanks to a recent eBay auction.
I have a few questions I hope someone here can answer.
1) Where would I find the engine number so I can determine what engine I have.
2) What would cause the powerflight trans not to ever shift into 2nd gear ?
3) What might be causing the starter motor to keep sapinning after the engine has started ?
4) What would the rear end ratio be ?
5) Anyone have a roof rack for sale ?
6) How do I attach a photo ?

Thanks in advance,
Reg

1. You should be able to tell which motor you have just by looking at it, unless it has been swapped in the past. The later 277 motor in an "A" motor like the 318 poly. The water outlet comes from the intake manifold and the manifold seals off the lifter valley. The other motor is a 270 Dodge motor which uses the same block as a Dodge hemi motor. This motor has a separate water crossover that bolts to the front of the heads and has the water outlet on it. Also, it uses a separate cover to seal the lifter valley under the intake manifold. But to answer your question more directly, the number should be located on the top front of the motor.

3. Sounds like the starter solenoid or the gear on the starter is sticking. Take the starter off and lube everything up well.

4. I'm not sure what the stock ratio would be for the suburbans, but my guess would be 3.55. To find out for sure, jack up ONE wheel off the ground and rotate the wheel 20 times. Count how many times the pinion rotates and divide by 10. That is your ratio. This is assuming you have an open gear. By keeping one wheel on the ground, you need the factor of 2 there. If it is a sure grip, then lift both wheels, spin the wheels 10 times, and then divide the pinion amount by 10.

6. There is a box called "Attach a file after posting" check it and it will take you to a place where you can upload pictures... but they must be under 250 meg in size and they need to have the extension of .jpg, not .jpeg to see them inline.

Hi, welcome to the site. Nice to see another '56 here.

Mine is a Canadian Dodge built from a Plymouth car with Dodge front sheet metal (Plodge).

Enjoy your car.

Well, the photo attempt failed. I'll take some photos with my other camera and try again.
Thanks to Powerflight and Old Ray ! Nice wagon Ray !
The engine appears to be a 277c.i.
