Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | How the heck do you get the trunk open with no key?
The lock is off the trunk but its closed, what trick is there to pop it open. The GM put a screw driver in it and turn doesnt work.

Then, you should be able to just get a finger where the lock should be and push on the plate in there, towards the front of the car, and the trunk will open.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | its a 58 dodge I think I can do the push technique. I will bring the screw driver also. Ill try both techniques. I don't want to try to get the seat out of the car and crawl through the hole.

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | That long lever attached to the trunk lock fits into a slot on the latch inside the trunk (attached either to the trunk lid or the body). When you turn the key, the lever will turn the slot and the trunk opens. So, all you need is a slot head screw driver with a shaft longer than the length of the lock and lever, place the head of the screw driver into the slot on the latch, and turn the screwdriver. And you are in!

Location: The Mile High City | 58 Dodge: you should be able to reach into the hole with your finger (wear work gloves - makes it easier) and push up on the plate. I have never seen the long lever in a '58 Dodge before. If the plate will not push upward, spray WD-40 in there and try, try again.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8948 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | ya gotta use a thin blade straight screw driver . with my dart in the garage and the lock set removed that's how i open it til it's time to put the lock set back in . you may have a tiny bit of trouble finding the latch slot with the driver but you'll get it . try lookin in the lock hole to see just how and where the slot is in the latch ----------------------later

Expert Posts: 4044 Location: Connecticut | 58 Dodge used the 'push button to release trunk lid' style trunk lock. So no screwdriver. That was 59 and later. So if you shine a light in the hole, you'll see a large pawl. Push it in with a dowel or similar and it should release the trunk. Ron

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | As the forum's resident locksmith, I agree wtih ronbo97. 1958 Dodge use a push button trunk lock so a turn of a screw driver in a slot will not do the job. You will have to reach through and push the mechanism that the back of the lock pushes. This is the exact lock, see the paddle at the end - you have to connect something to the piece that the paddle pushes on to open the lid. Expert Posts: 2290 Location: Eastern Iowa | Use your index finger and bend it to your left as you insert it into the opening and you will feel the tab, then push! My C (in storage) has had the lock removed for years and I open it all the time like that. Let us know of all the "treasures" you find in there!!

Expert Posts: 1493 Location: Jamaica Plain, MA | Dave is right. You can open it with your finger, just by sticking it in the hole and feeling the little push lever to the left. It takes 2 seconds. You don't need to make this anymore complicated than that.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5139 Location: cornpatch county, Southwest IOA | FYI I have taken the rear seat back out, and used enough extensions and the right size socket to remove the latch from the inside. You don't have to crawl into the trunk........................................MO
