What is the best transmission fluid to use in a '55 DeSoto powerflite trans? Dex-Merc?

Dex-Merc will work fine. Type A, which was the original spec, is still available.

Type A trans fluid is also available at off brand stores/gas stations. Coastal is one of the brands. Next time you are at a mom and pop store/gas station, wander back to the automotive supplies and you may find typa A.
