I have spent about $4k this month on server equipment & a new UPS. (And they don't sell this stuff at Best Buy, by the way). We still might need an HP DL360 G8 or G9, Dual CPU, 64GB, (2) RAID1 SAS HD, to replace the failing G6 firewall if you want to price that out. Am I reading your post correctly, moparsteve -- that you are making a generous offer to purchase this for us? -Dave

Expert Posts: 2004 Location: Branson, MO | Thanks Dave, Not being a "computer whiz", I can't understand much of what all went wrong but sounds like once the firewall is ironed out, all will be back on track. Yee haw! "It's delightful, it's delovely, it's DeSoto"

Extreme Veteran Posts: 499 Location: London, England | Just saw the announcement about the firewall failure. I'm using ipcop in VM on ESX and it works really well, so you may want to think about abandoning firewall hardware!

Elite Veteran Posts: 967 Location: Pittsburgh, PA | I actually have abandoned HW FWs for the most part. The old one was TMG, and FWIW it was great. I have been looking at a Sophos UTM appliance as a VM as well, but haven't tried it out yet. I'm comfortable with Fortigates, Netscreens, Watchguards, ASAs and TMG so I'd rather pay a little to avoid a new learning curve. The kicker is that I can find nothing wrong with the current unit. It passes every test I can throw at it except it refuse to communicate with other domain members (with very few logged errors, BTW). I am planning to just rebuild it to see if it was some kind of damage/corruption due to the UPS fault. FWIW, I have been really happy with TMG and have been holding out for a more similar replacement. A new DL360 can be re-purposed into whatever though, so I will go down that route if needed. A FW has to run on some sort of HW though, and having at least two physical servers is necessary for redundancy. We just happened to hit the 'perfect storm' of the wrong things being administratively out of commission during and unusual failure event all while I was 3000 miles away. Last time I ran the numbers we were at four nines for uptime over the last 5 years. Not bad for a home datacenter. This last outage shoots any chance of those numbers for a while. I have looked at hosted solutions, but it's really not a huge cost savings overall when looking at the amount of storage, bandwidth, etc. There are some advantages though, but I have not been all that impressed with performance or reliability at those I have used at work.
