Hey Guys, I have the dash ass'y on the bench, 59 Chry. I'm going thru the circuits as someone has moved some stuff around. I don't see this voltage limiter or anything not recognizable. Also don't see any reference to it in the wiring diagram. What am I looking for ?? If anyone is familiar with this thing, I'd like to hear from you. Thanks, Jerry

Jerry, not 100% on your car, but it might be a part of the fuel gauge on yours

If so, there may be a wire that ran from the fuel gauge across to the temp gauge (4 connections coming out of the fuel gauge?)

Thanks, Mick. I'l check that out. Is this going to be some little weird thing inside the gauge ? Also, the Amp ga has been messed with as it is falling apart inside the cluster. Also look like something is missing on the back side of the ga. Jerry

If it is in the fuel gauge, it should look like a thin strip with a contact at one end and a wire wrapped around it (hard to describe) and the other end (contact) goes to the extra terminal and also to the fuel gauge itself

Easy way to tell if it's part of the fuel gauge. The fuel guage cluster will have three contacts if it has the voltage regulator built into it, and only two if it does not.

Also... not the greatest quality, but I did do a video, so you'll get some idea what it all looks like.

As far as I know, 59 was the first year Mopar used voltage limiters. Some were external and some were built into a gauge, usually the fuel gauge. The trouble is that it was an early/late thing, and/or a supply/demand thing, whether or not the limiter was external or internal. I have even seen late production 60 Chrysler "domes" with external limiters bolted to them!!

If there is a power wire running from the fuel gauge to the temp gauge, the limiter is in the fuel gauge.

Hope this helps,
Greg

To keep it all in one thread, I dont see a voltage limiter (stabilizer) in any of those pics from the other thread you started

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=58602&...

Seeing that they are coil (electro magnetic) gauges not bi metal strip ones, it may not have one

The problem with having the voltage stabilizer that they used in the day (also a bi metal strip) with electro magnetic gauges (normally fast moving)
is that the bi metal voltage stabilizers actually pulse the power to the gauges, which will make the gauges sort of bounce (to slow for a flicker)

Voltage stabilizers were used more on the bi metal gauges because they are very voltage sensitive and the difference in voltage between normal running speeds and idle (especially with a generator) was enough to vary the readings considerably

Not so much of a problem on electro magnetic gauges (does vary, but just a small amount), some cars still used electronic voltage stabilizers on these gauges as well, but more in later years

The electro magnetic gauges were more expensive to make, which is why you find them more in the higher end models

If its all working. its all good
