Veteran Posts: 161 Location: Melbourne, Australia | I pulled the front wheels to check the wheel bearings and found a leaking wheel cylinder. There is rusty looking brake fluid under the rubber boot so I am assuming the worst and that I may have to replace them as a set. I found some on epay from old parts source but I suspect they are not US made? Are these good to use? Is there another source for quality brake items? http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Wheel-Cylinders-Brake-Hoses-1957-57-58-Pl... I will pull them soon for cleaning and inspection and it may just happen that a light hone will suffice along with new internals. Are there kits readily available? Does it have to be year specific or will any correct diameter generic kit work? I'd like to do it right the first time so any pointers or advice welcome. Thanks, Frank

Veteran Posts: 168 Location: SD | Old Parts Source = Kanter. From what I have read, these are probably "Made in China" parts. Rock Auto has AC cyls for <$25/ea, and Raybestos for around $30/ea. I know you didn't ask, but let me throw this in: I installed the AAJ disc conversion kit about 12 years ago, and never regretted it. Edited by zrxkawboy 2015-04-30 11:57 PM

I've checked mine and it looks like they are all damaged to some extent. There is quite heavy pitting in the bores, and one front has a stuck piston . Someone has put a kit through them previously coz there are three different types of pistons in total and I found a piston cup installed backwards !!

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8444 Location: Perth Australia | Frank There is a brake place near you called Hoppers Stoppers (in Hoppers Crossing), give them a call, they might be able to re sleeve yours and (I think) they can set up discs as well (if you want to go that road)

Veteran Posts: 161 Location: Melbourne, Australia | I enquired at my local brake and clutch shop if they sleeve master and wheel cylinders... They quoted $100 each !! I think they misunderstood my request for stainless steel sleeves and they must have thought I said gold ........ I ended up buying some from Rockauto a lot cheaper .

Veteran Posts: 149 Location: Iowa | I bought all of my front wheel cylinders on e-pay for about $25 each. Just use the NAPA part number 22801, 22802 etc. to search. Bought one from a person who didn't know what he had but listed what was on the box. There are deals to be had. All were NOS and made in USA. I got the hoses from a place in Argentina. They look pretty good. I did get the back cylinders from Rockauto. Much cheaper (circa $15) but probably made in China. The box is blank. I haven't installed anything yet so we will see. The parts are out there to be found. Good luck.

Veteran Posts: 161 Location: Melbourne, Australia | I have installed all the new cylinders I got from Rockauto and they fitted perfectly. Interestingly enough, the boxes were labelled Made in Mexico and Made in China but all the wheel cylinders had Made in USA cast in them
