the shackle and bushings look like its never been removed since 1961, the 2 nuts that hold the shackle on are on the outside, so to push out the shackle it will need to go in, in towards the frame, doesnt look like i will have enough room to remove the top part of the shackle with out hitting the frame, can i remove the 4 bolts that hold the bracket to the frame, that the shackle goes into ,then lower down the spring with shackle and bracket to gain space to remove it, ( is this normal for the shackle to be pushed, pryed out towards the inside, instead of removing the shackle towards the sheetmetal)

Yours are on backwards, but you can undo the 4 bolts to drop the springs down

If memory serves me right, one of the drain plugs in the trunk will let you get some penatrine or crc or whatever to soak the threads (they will be tight)

When you put it back together, put them the other way around

No if I'm reading it right the shackles are correct. The nuts should be on the outside.
You'll normally remove the entire bracket before you remove the shackles from the springs.

very good, thank you! i started to loosen the bolts, and remove the bracket last night, then stopped, i didn't want to make a mistake and cause me more problems, i blasted it with bp, letting soak over night, ill finish today, maybe i can get away with doing the same to the front bushing, also, my project is to replace spring bushings, clean and paint the springs, drop down and out the rear and clean and paint it ,

Hi, I'm a newbie and I'm learning about these FL cars myself, as everyone can attest. But I'd like to add my 2 cents on this one as I have just replaced the rear end.
My car is an untouched barn find left to die in 1975 until I rescued it. The shackles are just as yours were. with the nuts on the outside. I didn't want to risk breaking off any of the 4 mounting bolts, so I removed the nuts, pushed the shackle out as far as it would go, and sawed it off. The new ones were put on with the nuts on the inside to facilitate ease of installation. Looks and acts the same as before.

bigblockmopar was right, I first loosen the U bolts some ,that took some pressure off the springs , then i removed the 4 bolts holding the shackle bracket to the frame , then completely removed the U bolts and swung down the shackle & bracket , then removed the shackle from spring, wasn't that bad, reversed the order, all done

Maybe mine had been messed with?

I have another set of springs here that have the bracket with the 4 holes still attached, so maybe?

Mines back together as I found the though

Me being me, I had to have a think as to why they would put them on that way and all I can think is that it makes them
impossible to fall out if the nuts came off
