Location: North Australia | That is a neat Dodge, pity the seller didn't put up more pics. Could this be an ex cop car? Steve.

Location: The Mile High City | My guess is it would have had the Plymouth steering wheel if it were a law enforcement car - particularly state patrol.

Expert Posts: 1622 Location: Seville, OH | That is Louie Poole's Super D-500. He has had it for sale on and off for years and it looks like he has dropped the price to something reasonable. I have seen it close up and it is nice, but I didn't scrutinize it as a buyer would so I can't comment on value, but I don't think you would go wrong at the asking price. It has a Weiand dual quad intake which I think is correct for a Super D-500. I don't believe it is an ex-cop car.

Expert Posts: 1479 Location: Pacific Northwest | Gave him a call as soon as I saw the ad and he seems on the up and up about it. Bought it from the daughter of the original owner and redid the front seat. Runs, drives and stops. What more do you need from a '57 he says. Trying to arrange a trip to Sacramento before the end of the year.

Member Posts: 24 | Dear friend, My name is Clark Goodwin. I saw that you commented on the 57 Dodge Coronet "D500" that was previously owned by Louie Poole of Sacremento , California. It was sold. I now have an opportunity to purchase this Blue and White 2 door sedan. In your posting you thought that it was NOT a real D500. How can I tell for sure whether the car was born as a D500? Please help. I appreciate your help. Sincerely, R. Clark Goodwin, D.D.S. 315 440 1417 315 637 1189

As a mere starting-point, your car's engine's stamping-number appears at the bottom of the oil filler tube, at its front area. A 1957 D500 engine will be stamped: KD500-1XXX A standard 1957 Dodge engine is stamped KDS-1XXX The standard Dodge V/8 engine has slightly shorter pistons, which produces a lower compression ratio (like 8.5:1, IIRC..late nite post, here), than does the D500, which boasts a 9.25:1 c.r. Retrofitting the Hemi heads onto the standard (8.5:1) engine block will REDUCE the "Poly Head's" compression ratio to something like 8.0:1, which is not a good thing, performance or mileage-wise. And then, installing a second carb, along with a very-conservative distributor (timing) and OEM camshaft is a recipe for lousy-er performance and mileage.

I think from the data tag, but I don't know what would be on it to make it real. It IS a real D500 engine though which makes it a great candidate to create a Super D500 clone. Expert Posts: 1493 Location: Jamaica Plain, MA | Hey, no knocking the 2 door sedan. They were the lightest and most rigid FL cars, and made the best high performance sleepers of anything on the market at the time. A 59 Plaza club sedan with a Golden Commando could eat a 300 E for breakfast. At least off the line to about 75 mph. Set up right a 58-9 Dodge or Plymouth could so mid 13s in the quarter mile. That's abut where my 500 HP 62 300 resides. Not a Dodge expert-- did the 58s get the 350 as the D500 engine?

Let them knock- as long as people wet themselves over the hardtops (with that awkward bubble screen) the club coupes will be cheaper for you and me. This is a lovely car regardless of whether it's a real D500 or not. I'll take it on Doc, if you decide it's not for you.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | The 58 D500's got the mighty 361 c.i. engine in them, altho their engine stamping numbers always referenced : "L360-1xxx"....with the "L" confirming the 1958 model year for that engine. The standard 1958 Dodge V/8 was 350 c.i., and its engines carried the stamping numbers of: L350-1xxx.
