Location: The Mile High City | Kind of unusual to see a Fireflite Sportsman coupe under $1,000. http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/4347053580.html (1955 de soto 01.jpg) (1955 de soto 02.jpg) (1955 de soto 03.jpg) (1955 de soto 04.jpg) (1955 de soto 05.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 1955 de soto 01.jpg (45KB - 153 downloads) 1955 de soto 02.jpg (41KB - 167 downloads) 1955 de soto 03.jpg (47KB - 164 downloads) 1955 de soto 04.jpg (48KB - 170 downloads) 1955 de soto 05.jpg (32KB - 147 downloads)

Expert Posts: 4043 Location: Connecticut | Great price, even as a parts car. Wonder if the engine turns. Ron

Location: The Mile High City | I'm with you Ron, usually the asking prices for cars worse than this are a lot higher. He says he has the engine (which is the important thing) the transmission is missing, but I would think that would be a lot easier to get. If someone does buy it and finds a transmission - this is still a numbers matching car. I wonder if all the missing bits and pieces are still with it somewhere?

Location: The Mile High City | Well, I called Dave and asked him if all the missing stuff was there and he said it was. I think I will go take a look see this weekend. Anyone interested in going along?

Expert Posts: 4043 Location: Connecticut | Did he say if the engine is still in the car ? Also, is it locked up ? The driver's quarter seems to have some damage. Can you shoot some photos for us ? The rare parts on the car, which I don't see in the pics, are the Powerflite nameplate on the rear below the trunk lid, the plastic bird front and center below the hood and the hood leading edge moulding, which I can see from the pics is cracked in half. Location: The Mile High City | I have been turning over an idea: what if a group of guys in the Denver area formed a limited liability corporation (LLC) to buy a old car (maybe like this one). The LLC would establish membership dues to cover license, registration, and insurance. There would be a rolling schedule for the car - let's say a two or three month period. This year, Mr. X might have January and February - which would stink - but the next year he moves a bit forward and eventually he has July and August - which is great. Anyhow, when it is your turn to own it and drive it - it is all yours. The only rules are when you turn it over to the next member, the car 1. Has to have a full tank of gas and an oil change; and 2. You have to do something to improve the car. Over time, the car gets better and better and you don't have the hassle of ownership all year round. I wonder if something like that could actually work? Seems like you would have to start off with a running car though.

Ron I'll check it out. He said the engine goes with the car - but it looks like it is out. It seems like he had a tough time speaking on the phone (emphasima, maybe) so I didn't ask him if the engine turns, but I will find out.

Expert Posts: 3155 Location: NY & VT | Interesting idea... everyone would have to have decent storage ie: garage space, to do it right though. That car looks well worth doing, and the price is right! Edited by firedome 2014-02-25 10:34 AM

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | I've often wondered if it would be possible to organize a "classic car club" along similar lines. Probably need at least 10 or more people to start it, get a storage building, the initial group would each have to put up $10K each, then use the money to buy as many cars as the group can afford, charge dues to cover the building rent and insurance and keep a fund for maintenance and repair. You could take in new members and they would pay to join. Old members could sell their membership back to the club at then current rates. Everyone gets to drive what they want on a reservation basis and a per day rental charge. I used to be in a flying club and that's more or less how it operated except airplanes cost a lot more to buy and maintenance so there were more members and less planes per member. My main worry with something like this is having irresponsible people who would abuse the cars or fail to take responsibility for damage they caused. Somehow that would have to be worked out. In the airplane club it wasn't much of a problem because pilots are really by the book operators and accidents are usually bad, not fender benders, so they can't be ignored like they didn't happen.

Expert Posts: 3155 Location: NY & VT | I, for one, have never equated Colorado with the Desert SW when it comes to dryness, but am always amazed at how many well preserved 50s-70s cars I see whenever we visit our Dear Daughter in Denver! Might be another trip out in May, and while I'm not likely to be able to re-do any more cars, much less even completely finish what we have already, it's always fun to look around to see what's out there.

Location: The Mile High City | I think I missed it. I talked to Dave on Saturday, but it was cold and snowy and neither of us wanted to venture out. I tried to call on Sunday, but couldn't reach him. The advertisement was down early last week. So I never even saw it!
