does anyone have an idea of why the transmission cooler in the bottom of the radiator would blow out--or where to find the replacement part?

Hi
I've never heard of the oil cooling "blowing out" however if the damage to the cooler looks as though it was caused by an overpressure I would check the Torque convertor control valve and perhaps the line pressure regulator valve in the transmission itself. As far as a replacement if your lower tank is in good shape a new cooler could be installed by a radiator shop , if all else fails an external cooler could be installed in front of the lower portion of your radiator and "plumbed" in to the existing transmission cooling lines with nicely bent and tucked in steel tubing and fittings. I've done this many times.

I've seen several cases where the cooler leaks fluid into the radiator and vice-versa but only a visual inspection could confirm if it actually "blew out".

I had the rad in my '57 4 door needing an new cooler installed; my local rad shop did it. He wasn't able to get an exact match. He soldered one of the old holes shut, and drilled a new one beside it, as the new cooler had a slightly smaller c-c on the ports.
