Looking for some assistance in sorting out what I have here. It's a '59 Dodge Custom Royal. The firewall plate reads as follows;

SG EW M1 M2 M3 M4 M5 M6 M7 M8 M9

SCHED 0402 NO 5009 MODEL MDH3 BT 352 PT FE2 TR S76

Inside the door;

M354 101422

Stamped on the engine;

ML 361 57083

Is the engine correct/original for the car? As well a breakdown of the data plate would be appreciated.

Los Angeles-built car with LA-style dataplate.

Car built around April 2, 1959. Custom Royal Lancer 2dr HT. Green Swivel Seats inside. Jade fins. Remainder of the body is Aquamarine.

LA-type dataplates don't have as much information as Detroit-type.

Great stuff, thanks Ron.

Any telling what sort of options the car has/came with?

Can't really tell from the LA-type dataplate. You will have to contact Fiat/Chrysler Historical and order a build sheet. They will only provide this service if it is your car and you can offer them proof.

Can you tell from something there that that engine is original to the car?

Chrysler historical could not confirm the engine #s for my plymouth, just what engine it was

I don't know if that exact engine came with the car when it was sold new. No way to determine that.

I was hoping you had a way of telling that

My plymouth is missing its vin tag and even with the stuff from Chrysler historical, it doesnt register the actual engine number

Main problem I have is a whole pile of paperwork (import papers ect) relating to the import of a 60 fury and no way to tie the car to the paperwork

Oh well, I will have to get AG Backeast to make me a new tag

More bad news: AG Backeast can only create replicas of existing P/T plates whose images are provided to them,
for replication.

The GOOD news: your car was built in L.A. , whose cars have little numbers-information on their P/T's....and, it APPEARS
that your car's P/T plate has almost(?) no extraneous numbers on it, so, AG "should" be able to be
convinced to re-pop your P/T, based upon the information that the CHS has provided to you.

So, Step-1: let's see your P/T plate.....EH; I'm confused!!!!

Let's see what you've got (PM is ok).

As I understand it, Chrysler Corp'n in 1960, quit using sequential engine numbers. The last two digits of the engine number will be month and day it was built. The only connection that can be drawn is that the engine build date should precede the car build date by an "appropriate" time gap. I'm not sure what an "appropriate" time gap would be! A few days --- to ---- ??? Your Chrysler Historical stuff will give you the cars build date.

As I (mis-)understand it, latter-year PLY's , on their IBM cards, do not confirm their engine numbers (unlike the Dodges, which
do show engine numbers on them...?

I dunno when the lack of confirmation engine number began, though, on the IBM cards.

1958 was the last year the IBM cards had the engine numbers on them, including the box for the engine number.

For 1959 the box for the engine number was eliminated and thus no more engine numbers on IBM cards.

As of 1959, there is no way to confirm the engine in the car now was the engine in the car when it rolled off the assembly line.
