I found an old interchange book and it said that the '59 Plymouth V-8 torsion bars (exc convertibles) will interchange with a 63-4 Chrysler Newport and 300. Can anyone confirm this? thanks

Hi
I checked my interchange manual as well and it says the same thing and cites part number 1825606 and 1825607 respectively So...I checked the '59 parts book and this is the heavy duty Torsion bar for Plymouth and Dodge(Canadian). I went to the '63 and '64 parts books and the Bar is used not only for the Newport and 300 but for the Custom 880 and all the Chryslers excluding Imperial.

Yeah, the exchange book doesn't show a lot of options and it doesn't even show any similar ones. My 59 parts book says for MP2[1959 Plymouth V8] - 1959 MP2 [except conv., coupe, and Suburban] Rt. #1825 606 and Lt. #1825 607. I believe those are the correct bars? Maybe someone has a 63 or 64 parts book could see if these #s were used then?
Hope that helps,
Karl.

Funny thing is, I just looked in my 1960 parts book and it shows #1825 606 and #1825 607 to have been used on all 1960 MOPAR Suburbans with 3rd seat and in my 1961 book, they are listed as used on "heavy duty" MOPARs, taxis, police, and with sway bar eliminators.
IF these are the correct #s and you are trying to track them down, Collectors Auto Parts has a bunch of NOS torsion bars for $300 or a little over per side. I think may have these #s?

What interchange book(s) are y'all looking at? I understand Chrysler printed some "supercedence" books or whatever but I've never seen one. Anyone have? Is the info from a Hollander's interchange or similar.

Finding suitable HD torsion bars suited to Forward Look cars is a really big deal !!!

Hi
The interchange book I've got was compiled by Auto Interchange systems 3211Robinwood lane Minnetonka, Minnesota 55343. Covers 1950 to 1965 model years Chrysler products only. I bought it at a swap meet many moons ago don't know if its still available. The superseded parts lists you mentioned (commonly referred to as a changeup manual) aren't of a lot of use unless you have an extensive parts book collection as the lists go from part number to part number only, no reference to what the part is or its application. The information you would obtain would be the next usable part number or if the part has gone obsolete in the Mopar/Chrysler parts system.

The changeup books were update as well so if a part number was "obsolete" for a period of time you would not be able to find the next changeup if one existed unless you had the earlier manual....

So your 63-4 Chrysler parts book confirms the interchange information with these '59 Plymouth torsion bars?

If you haven't look for this book yet, her's some more info. I have what is probably the same interchange book that he mentioned and I believe I got on eBay a few years ago. It was published in 1979. Its not the best reprint but is very readable. It has 176 front and back pages covering all MOPARs 1950-65 and some truck parts from 1948-65. It list all the parts book codes for each car, engine ser. #s and # locations, axle groups, bearing group, brake group, clutch group, cooling group, electrical group, engine group, fuel group, suspension group, trans group, wheel group, body group, glass group, and hubcaps. It gives lots of parts #s and some of the specs such as the torsion bar strengths, ect.
Well worth looking for.
The address mine has on it is:

4048 Velarde Court

I'm a great believer in Hollander Interchange Manuals. Each edition covers about a 10 year span and in addition to showing their part number as well as the OEM part number for a particular part, it also has a cross reference section under their part number that shows all of the applications for that particular part.

I didn't specifically know that '59 and 63/64 torsion bars would interchange, but it also doesn't surprise me. Knowing these bars interchange also suggests that a lot of suspension, brake and steering components would interchange as well.
