| Hi,
Has anybody bought new worm gear and sector gear that fits 1959 Aussie Plymouth Gemmer steering box.
I saw in an old thread that someone ordered ones for mid fifties Ford but he didn't say if they fit or not.
Any info welcome.

Not sure how your going to go finding steering box parts
I have 2 for a 60 dodge that are probably the same, but the stupid idiot that I bought all the parts off cut one of the steering shafts off 1
I havnt got around to checking inside either of them yet, but the adjustment screws on both are screwed right down, so probably worn out

| Earlyfordstore.com sell new worm and sector gears up to the late fifties and complete rebuild kits.
Their prices are very good.
As far as I know Ford used Gemmer boxes back then. The problem is knowing if any of them will actually fit the box used in the Plymouth.
I emailed them a couple of weeks ago and haven't heard back.
I was hoping someone has already gone down this road and could say which one to get.

| Hey guys, yes the worm is on a spline and will press off. Only RHD parts will fit, LHD worm goes the other way. The 60 Box will bolt in and is a better more heavy duty box with larger worms. Slightly larger of course but will go in all the same. ( steering shaft that the wheel goes on is about 2 inches short, so needs to be made a bit longer and use the old outer )
The only way you are going to come up with a really good steering box is to find a re-builder that can build up the worn ( normaly only the top worm that wears to any amout ) and machine it back to new.
Is there such a steering shop still in Australia? I have not heard of them if there is. I know a bloke who is sending his back to the US to have it done.
I think you can buy a re-built standard Valiant box here in Australia, maybe they have the skill to re-build the worm? anyone know who they are? George. |

| Steering solutions Australia website claims they can fix jobs the others can't and they say they do classic and vintage.
I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if they can rebuild the worm and sector gears.
The free play in mine is constant from lock to lock, so the wear must be fairly even.
I am wondering if having the parts hard chromed to build them up is an option. It should build up evenly eliminating the need for machining afterwards?
I will make some enquiries about that too.
From what I read today there is a limit of 1mm thickness. That might be enough considering the hill and valley fit of the two parts.
Maybe?

I havnt had one apart for a while, so I am struggling to remember just now, but if the bush is worn out, just replacing that could get you a long way towards good.
I had a look at some forum, where some guy was making worms up and he was talking $3000 complete o/haul

| Good news for owners of these RHD Mopars.
I just rang the Bloke at Steering Solutions in NSW and he knows these steering boxes well.
He said that as long as the gears aren't broken he can rebuild these boxes.
The price around $460
That sounds very reasonable to me.
He also said that this setup often fails a roadworthy inspection because the amount of play is checked with the engine off.
It needs the engine running to take up the slack in the rams actuating valve.
My car hasn't been driven since the 1980's and I was judging it on the amount of play with the engine not running.

| More bad news for you now that we are talking Australian old ram power steering. It is very likely that the worm in the end of the link will also need rebuilding as they also wear badly and cause a lot of play.
If you box is rebuilt you should not even need the old ram power steering deal, steering should be quite decent ( fairly light ) |
