I need to rebuild my gearbox during the winter, but first I have get it out of the car.
No plans on pulling out the motor, just the gearbox, and problem is that I don’t have a car lift.
The plan is to raise the car on stands and after that pull the gearbox.
I know it’s a heavy piece of iron, and don’t want to drop it.
So, any advice from you experienced guys on how to get it out of the car is highly appreciated.
And no, I will not rebuild it myself, will be done by a professional.

The box is not so heavy you can't handle it coming out I guess reasonable strength is required though. Try and get the pitman arm off to make more room, to maneuver it down. Hardest part is pulling the column jacket up to access the pin holding the shaft to the box. If you have a shop manual you are good to go. Don't use Lares!!

it's heavy if the gear box is the transmission . it that case it far more easier if not being able to access helpful tools is a problem , to pull the motor and trans together and especially if working by
ones self . yrs ago when i was a kid , i did a powerglide from under , layin on my back . i swore never again and didn't . but maybe if one had a hard floor and a trans jack , it might make it a ton
easier . layin on your back using muscle alone aint gonna get it ----------------------------------------------------later

Rent a trans jack and you will be happy. Many Pep Boys will lend tools and equipment for free. No idea if they would have a tranny jack but renting one would probably cost less than $20 a day?
In my 20s, I removed and installed a turbohydramatic[with converter] by my self in my driveway with my van on jack stands. I bet that weighted 200 lbs with full converter? I used alignment studs to help it into place. Ah to be young strong and stupid again. Now that I am old and stupid, I wonder if I had 5 lengths of all thread rods, could I have threaded them into the block and simply slid it up on them? If it is a straight shot with the motor angled down, that would be way too easy.

Not sure if you mean a manual or an auto either?

I have had nothing to do with a manual, but if its an auto, you would need to be Hercules to dead lift it into place.

I think you would be better off pulling it out with the engine, then splitting it, good opertunity to clean up any other little issues you might have

If you go the engine/trans together way, removing the front clip is surprisingly easy (if not dramatic)

Excuse me for unclearly expressed me. It’s a Torqueflite.
My plans are leave the bellhousing attached to the motor, and use long studs to slide the trans out of the converter. So far so good, but the thing is how lower the trans to floor? Hasn’t enough space for a trans jack. But I will try to do it with my garage jack.
Thanks’ for you advices.

You can get a trans adapter for your jack that fits to the trans pan.Works good, just the floor jack will not capture and balance the trans.
