Regular Posts: 92 | Has anyone upgraded their power steering and/or gearbox to a later model that uses a rag joint or will allow an ididit universal column?

Can a late 70's P/S pump be used with a late 50's P/S gearbox ? Hypothetically yes - you need to set the pressure to the specs of the old steering gear.

I have replaced the crappy joint in the system with the socket -style factory flex joint from a 70's dodge D100, the spline is the same, therefore flaming river or borgeson makes a joint with that spline as well. Almost any ps pump will work with no adjustments needed, I am using a 1977 dodge pump to run a 1991 dodge caravan rack and pinion and it works fine! I've also gone the other way, a r+p pump connected to a steering box, no issues whatsoever! Edited by Resurrector 2014-05-07 9:42 AM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8947 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | i went from power to manual steering for my dart . the steering shaft for a manual has an end to use a rag joint . the joint i used is from a 74 lincoln . if you use the shaft from a manual steering car to replace the power shaft and doing a few mods to the power housing you can make it work ------------------------------------------------------------later http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=26788&... Regular Posts: 92 | Thanks it sounds a bit more complicated than I thought.. Was hoping for more of a bolt on solution for the gearbox/pitman arm and then rely on the ididit or flaming river to handle the rest

Expert Posts: 3575 Location: Netherlands | If you redrill and 'inner-tube' the framerails I'm fairly sure you could mount that box in your car. I've got a Borgeson power steeringbox in my daily'73 Dart, but it mounts to the K-member, not the side framerails. Love the steering response though. Feels more modern, dependable and most of all, no play.

Regular Posts: 92 | hi bigblockmopar thanks for responding.. what does "redrill and innertube the frame rails" mean? basically are you saying just redrill for the holes on this bracket to work? what about fabricating a bracket that fits the existing frame and removing and welding it to the borgeson setup? it looks like the bracket on the borgeson is welded on.. but maybe i am wrong

Regular Posts: 92 | if a D100 gearbox will bolt on i wonder if this will work.. setup for a 1972 d100 it has a higher gear ratio http://www.summitracing.com/parts/agr-204317/overview/year/1972/mak...

Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | Theoretically, you could make anything work. All you are doing is turning a shaft. As long as the geometry is right, or close, you should be fine. Even better if the pitman arm from the old setup would bolt to the new setup, then it would be exact except for the number of turns lock to lock. I think that is what BBM was saying. You would need to support the gearbox, so at that point, you would likely have to box in the frame to give the steering box a place to bolt to. If you did an over type bracket, that would work as well, as long as there was something between the bracket and the original frame to eliminate the bracket from twisting or distorting.

Veteran Posts: 130 Location: Central NJ | I put the Borgeson kit on my 76 Corvette. (The mounting is different from the Ford kit in the link) At the time I took a look to see If I could make it work in my 56 Dodge and I decided that I could not make it work with the geometry of the frame and the exhaust. It may be worth looking into that Ford setup as it appears to put the box up high above the frame. I eventually made a Cavalier center steer rack work but in my opinion it was not worth the effort in time or $. I have not driven it yet so I might be wrong but because the car is rear steer there is no safe way to get the linkage from the column to the rack. Mine is a stick so If you dont have to get around a clutch pedal someone might have better luck. (IMG_3241 copy.jpg) Attachments ---------------- IMG_3241 copy.jpg (58KB - 136 downloads)

Veteran Posts: 174 Location: Phoenix, AZ | With regards to using a new PS pump with an old steering box: I am using a 2005 Dodge Viper PS pump with my 1959 Plymouth box and it has worked perfectly for 3 years and has not leaked a drop. My box was rebuilt with new seals but nothing else was changed.
