I just reassembled my interior with newly painted column, dash, etc. The horn wouldn't work when I tried it. I jumped a wire from the contact in the column to a good ground and the horn works fine. As is, the column is isolated from ground because of the paint. Was there a bare metal spot somewhere on the column which I shouldn't have painted?

I can easily figure something out to make it work, but I am curious as to how it was grounded from the factory.

Depends on wether its power steering or not (I am assuming power)

The p/s column (shaft) is grounded via a brass shim thats at the base of the shaft, where the rubber insulator is

It is most likely broken, its then grounded through the steering box

If you ground the steering jacket (the bit you painted) I am not sure it will consistantly work as it will rely on getting its earth through the bearing at the top of the column assembly

This might help

Thank you, but I forgot to mention that this car is manual steering with a rag joint.

Ok, thats easy

A nice black unnoticable wire from a bolt on the shaft side to a bolt on the box side

I have seen this done also with a brass strip, but the wire will work just as well
