Will a W451 straight windshield work to replace a W453 bubble windshield in a 59 dodge hardtop using the original rubber gasket? Looks like the angle of the glass at the top would be more horizontal where it enters the rubber gasket with the bubble windshield. Do I need a different gasket ? Dont want to pay big bucks for the bubble windshield if I dont have to. Thanks

The 59 Dodge takes a W453. Using the wrong windshield is never a good idea. Maybe someone will trade you for your 451 ?

I really went the rounds on this, I really did not want to spend 2K for a windshield for a driver. The most helpful information I got was from Pilkington Glass and I ordered a flat glass windshield from them. In my case it was 590 vs. 604, but here is what I was told. If you have a convertible you will need a bubble, but if it is hard top you can use either. My windshield guy said it looks like it will work just fine but I have not installed it yet since we found rust when we pulled the old one out. So as I understand it the only difference between the two is the bubble, the mounting shape is the same.

For 59 Dodge, the part number is the same for HTs and converts. So I don't see how that advice would be valid for 59 Dodge. Since your car isn't a 59 Dodge, it's apples to oranges. Also, I don't know where the 2K figure came from. If you're looking for a driver-quality windshield, chances are that you can find one for under 500.

i have always said, the worst part of Mopar products are the owners. fact is my 60 Soto windshield was quoted at $2K for a bubble, bought a brand new non-bubble for $297, not going to say anything more than that. I have a '59 Dodge 4dr HT and I also need a windshield. Please let me know if this flat windshield will work in your HT.

Just trying to save the dude a lot of aggravation when he tries to use a windshield that won't work for his car. I guess that my knowledge of 59 Dodges based on owning them for over 25 years is nothing compared to what some random glass guy told you about a car that is from a completely different era.

I don't know 60s era cars, so I hope the 590/604 swap works for you. Otherwise, you'll be out $300 and still have to find the correct windshield. Whoever was going to charge you $2K for a windshield is clearly out to rip you off.

Oh that makes sense, because I did not mention Pilkington Glass, that he could Google and call them and get expert advice, and I did say my part numbers are the same have at it. Let me be more clear, I was trying to be polite and tell the guy to call an expert rather than take the advice of a self appointed expert. But now I understand that you are an expert on 59’ but you don’t know 60s’ era cars, I can’t sum up the intellect of your post any better than that.

Here I found a picture of a forum member sergey's car with the original bubble windshield and a latter picture with a flat replacement windshield he had installed so I assume that they are interchangeable. Wonder if the same gasket works for both styles?

Parts book has different part no. for 451 vs. 453 windshield gasket.

We report...you decide. It's your car. You may do with it as you wish.

Yes it is but in his post he says his original bubble was pitted and that he replaced it with a flat style windshield and came to like the flat style better because of the more layed back look.

I would really like to get a windshield for my 1959 Dodge Custom Royal. I want one that works and doesn't cost me a fortune. There are not a lot of '59 Dodge owners so what is the verdict without a lot of snipping. I feel like I'm in JR high again.

Do you care if it's clear or tinted ? Clear windshields are usually much cheaper than the solex or solex/shaded varieties. Also keep in mind that the same windshield is on 58/59 Dodge, Desoto and Chrysler 2dr HT and 4dr HT. Also 59 Plymouth 2dr HT and 4dr HT.

I would take one of those straight windshields if they will work. I'm not messed up if the curve is not at the top if this straight WS will work.

It is my understanding the windshields are also different for the 2dr & 4dr sedans. So a hardtop WS cannot be used in a sedan, or a sedan WS used in a hardtop car, (59 Dodge). Jerry

From what I understand there are W453 "versions", for example for the 58 plymouth(there is a 20 inch and a 23 inch version). I am ordering after measuring the 23 inch version(453, non bubble).
