Tried it once, used a transmission dipstick for the rod. Biggest hassle was trying to reinstall the top tank....kept getting little bubbles in the solder, try to close the bubble and the solder would melt somewhere else. Very frustrating, never tried again. |

One of the shops I worked in around 1987 repaired radiators as a sideline so I got to learn a bit about repairing and recoring while I worked there.
We would use an old trans dipstick to push out the blockages in the tubes just like John said.
It's amazing what you can find in a cooling system at times making it's way into the top tank.
Most ( if not all ) of the blockages were in the first few inches of the top of the tubes as per the hot water flow from the engine.
One thing I learn't especially that if you tried too hard to push out a blockage ( say a chip of rust ) then you would put a split or a hole in the tube and then you would only find the said hole once you re-soldered the tanks on and pressure tested the radiator.
The only fix then was an ugly tearing of the fins between the tubes to get to the split/hole and solder it up to repair ( and then the radiator looked real ugly and abused even though it was water tight ) or de-soldering the tanks and recoring it.
