Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Hi Rich, this is Ian in Victoria, I spoke to you last night on the phone. Glad to see you made it here ! For the benefit of members, this car was advertised locally near me last June and I posted it on the for sale thread somewhere. The engine and trans had been removed by a high school shop at some point and were lost. I saw the car about 10-12 years ago running and it was in very nice original shape.

A/C is aftermarket Mark-IV which was working but the compressor blew seals. I have a seal kit for it.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 471 Location: Central Alberta | Nice looking car, really like the color. Were there no 383`s or 440`s around to do a build? I will never understand how anyone can put a GM or Ford engine into a Chrysler Corporation car. Marty

Regular Posts: 53 | well it's quite easy as a pro dragracer most engines are gm based,at the tracks,,i see thousands of cars with different brand engines,there,i realize not so common in street cars,but this car was a salvage job,i am not a fan of any particular car just unique cars in general,,,if i was to do a resto i would modernize the entire chassis with a 5.7 hemi and "art morrison" suspension,just the old car appearance,and today i drove the car downtown and i realize why brake upgrades are necessary,,DRUMS SUCK

Veteran Posts: 191 Location: Nebraska | I know what you mean. With my old T-Bucket I could do adjust the timing and carbs from the front seat. I'm making some progress on my car. The engine is out and the gas tank is out and the car is almost fully stripped. I'll get some halfway decent bodywork done so I can get it in primer and then get it running and driving. It might be a primered rod for this summer so I can finish some other projects. I have my buddies 64 Dodge that I am turning into a gasser that I have to finish and then I have my 63 Plymouth to do. It seems like the work never ends.

| ||
Regular Posts: 53 | i hear ya there,the gasser is cool also,what is the 63 plymouth like?? i have no time in the summer to build rods cause i run my superpro dragcar every weekend and that thing takes alot of time,and so-on
savoy_man |
| ||
Veteran Posts: 191 Location: Nebraska | The 63 is extremely solid. It is a no rust car from California. I have the bodywork almost complete (there really wasn't much to do but dings and dents) and then I started on the gasser. So now I am finishing the gasser and throwing the 58 together at the same time. I can't imagine how much time racing full time would take. I'd love it but there is no way I could afford it or have the time for it. I'm glad guys like you do though so i can go and enjoy watching.

Regular Posts: 53 | ok after driving this beast i have realized that the rear of the car is getting lower and lower to the ground and now if i give medium power the driveshaft hits the floor,,was wondering if there is airshocks for these old cars or should i get new leafsprings addad,,,,i wonder?
savoy_man |
| ||
Veteran Posts: 191 Location: Nebraska | I believe that air shocks for all large body plymouths will work. I used super stock springs on my red 58 and it sat high with standard shocks. I plan on going cheap and using the air shocks I already have on my current 58. Depending on the traction you need/want you may consider new springs.

They have a few stores in Victoria, and if they are not much help you can try the main Vancouver location at 138 West 3rd Avenue. The guys there were pretty good in tracking down parts. 1-604-874-5777 You might have to send in your shoes to get them relined.

Expert Posts: 3577 Location: Blythewood, SC | I had to have my brake shoes relined. There are no one piece axles for our cars. You can swap in a later rear axle assembly. I "think" the E body axle is a direct fit, but I cannot remember the widths. There is a chart on moparts.com that has the widths of the newer rear axles.

Regular Posts: 54 Location: Aquasco, MD | Relining the brake shoes is probably the most cost-effective option. I had the ones on my old Belvedere done by All Frictions Co. in Portland, CT. This was a few years ago, but they did a great job and had a pretty quick turnaround. Prices weren't bad, but I don't know how much of a hassle it would be for you to ship 'em across the border and back. Last time I tried to ship parts up to Canada I was shocked at what they wanted for shipping.

Elite Veteran Posts: 957 Location: Signal Mountain, TN | One note... whatever town your in, if there is a clutch specialist (like the one we have in town) they can usually re-line brake shoes as they do it for large truck brakes. Just an idea... you might have a local option.

Expert Posts: 1493 Location: Jamaica Plain, MA | Nice car. For your rear end, you also might nuke the 57 unit with that motor. I put an E body rear in my 58 when I blew up the 4.1-1 in there after a 413 swap. It fit after some fiddling. You could also use the e brake on there... I imagine you have no e brake now?

Regular Posts: 53 | thanks for the help guys i will do all that once i take them off and get relined,as JT says i will nuke the rear diff too very soon,i did find a 78 lincoln diff with rear discs cheap with e-brake ,as i have not one now,,i just keep a 1/4 between me and cars infront,,maybee a parchute might help

Veteran Posts: 191 Location: Nebraska | The pics of those cars look great together. I love to see finned cars at shows. If you can't get brake shoes I have started the disc brake conversion on my 58 and everything inside the front looked brand new on the one side. I haven't taken the passenger side off yet but if it looks as good i will let you know and you can decide if you want all of it. The disc brake swap with the Scarebird brackets I bought on Ebay is really easy.

Veteran Posts: 191 Location: Nebraska | I think my uncle might be using the parts for his car. If he doesn't end up using them I will let you know. The conversion is easy. I am going to use a dual master cylinder. I got one from a 69 D-100 that will work. I am fighting with fitting headers in the car at the moment. Then I can run the brake lines.
