I saw this on eBay and it is something I'm interested in however I'm floored by the pricing. To me it's just a really cool sedan and the pricing should reflect that but apparently I'm way wrong.

I'm not sure what to read into that - "floored" by the pricing, "just" a really cool sedan, "pricing should reflect"

There's no "buy it now" price and bidding is in-process, but I for one am not the least bit surprised to see a current $5k bid.

I've followed the '56s off and on for several years, even with the current economic climate and the description of what needs done to her, $5k still sounds like a STEAL to me.

This one needs too much to break the $10k mark, but I'd not be surprised in the least to see her break $6.5k, MAYBE $7.25k, as-is.

I've never followed the police car market valuations, I'm not sure if that brings in a premium or not. I'm assuming it does by saying $6.5k.

But even with no police car premium, I'd call $5k a STEAL.

Somewhere in the $6's sound spot-on to me.
I knew a guy 20-some years ago that spent $2.5k for a "frozen" D-500 - engine only.
At least, that's what he claimed to have paid, I had no reason to doubt him at the time.

I don't want to be negative, but I question the police car pedigree. The left fender has been replaced, so the spotlight/siren could be an added item, and the meatball is not installed nor original - as per the seller's description. The radios are not installed, so they could have been bought to make it into a police car, and I don't see any evidence of any spotlights having been mounted on the cowl. I don't see any holes for the radios and mic where they would have mounted on the dash (of course it could have all been under dash as well). If it is indeed a real police machine, that would be extremely cool, especially with it being a D500, but just by looking the photos/description I wouldn't bet the farm that it is the real-deal.

Here's my message from the seller and his three engine photos.

Apparently, Hemi heads might have been installed on a Poly head engine?

Hello D501:
I will not be back home until Sunday. I can check the stamped and
casting numbers then.
I do know that the stamped number is NOT a D500-XXXX number. The block
was replaced at one time.
I will also check the back of the Glove Box for the build sheet--that
would be great if it is still there!!!
I did forget to include engine compartment photos. I have attached them
to this email--let me know if they come through. If not, send me your
email address and I will send them to you. It is a Power Brakes & Power
Steering car with the ORIGINAL air cleaner.
Thanks for your interest,
Ed

Very interesting indeed. If she is NOT a D500, then I'd drop the value down into the $2's. Maybe $3's.

My cars are sheetmetal dreams for me. I don't buy or waste my time on cars I don't love.

So, comments about six or ten thousand dollar cars being "outrageously priced" makes me
think "How much are a person's dreams worth to them ?".

Most guys around this forum are pretty passionate about these "extra effort" cars we choose
to inflict upon ourselves. I just can't understand thinking a 6K or 10K price tag on your dream
is "too much". It's your dream ! Why sell yourself short ? Who deserves the benefit and pleasures
of your hard work in life more than you ?

Be nice to YOU !

This just in, from the seller:

Hello Again Neil:
The conversation activity on Forwardlook is spot on---
The car is obviously a D-500, the motor-heads casting numbers, intake
manifold casting numbers and carburetor tag are all original D-500
motor.

As to the pedigree--I can only go by the obvious of it not being built
or purchased as a high end optioned Dodge sedan. I guess it is the
original rubber floor mats and beefed up suspension that has us leaning
towards the car being purchased for some type of utility use. I clearly
said that I was told about the police car aspect.
I did contact the Montana State Police and spoke with someone there who
only knew that Dodges were NOT purchased by them until later--I "think"
he said in the 60's. So it is not a State Police Car. He did say that
many local Sheriffs would have purchased this type of car and it not
necessarily is a "patrol" car--but still a municipal car,
never-the-less.

Also part of the message string is the mention that even if not "proven"
to be a police car--it is a valuable piece.

Thank you for bringing the web site to me---I am a diehard MoPar person
and appreciate your information.
Ed

Ed, we really need to confirm the engine block's stamping number, which is found at the base of the oil filler tube.

In terms of it being a genuine police package Dodge, I have my doubts. However, anyone could order anything if they had known what boxes to check. Some smaller municipalities required officers to purchase their own cars, this could be something like that.

The beacon has the wrong dome on it also. The radio is not a correct radio, it is from the late 1960s or early 1970s.

If someone pick this up, the correct spotlight bracket is available on eBay right now, NOS. The bracket is sometimes the hardest thing to find for a 50s squad restoration.

Hi cpd1212:
Correct--there is no way to be absolutely positive on the pedegree. As to the beacon and radio-- I do note in my description; "The roof “Bubble Gum” light is not original but is included with the car. It is not bolted to the roof. The 1960’s Motorola Police radio & speaker is not installed but also included." I have always tried to have my descriptions as clear as possible--no one likes fuzzy or unclear information. Thanks for your comments.

Hello 58 300D:
Correct the pedigree cannot be determined for sure. I tried, in my description, to state the information as I know it. And the roof beacon and radio, as described, are not installed--just included if the buyer is going to continue finishing the car as a police car. The thing we know for sure is that it came from Montana, is a D-500 Black & White car, has the original rubber mat floor covering, beeafed up (beyond stock D-500) springs and not much else more. Like I described--I purchased it as a donor car for another project--but realized it is much to good for that fate.

Hello d500Neil:
Asd I wrote to you directly; I can only read the last 4-digits--the prefix was eiter not stamped correctly (which is what it looks like) or otherwse obliverated. What is there, however, is the block casting number, by the valey cover, on the Left side. It is 1739429-4, which, acording to the Leo Linquist "hemi Engine data" book is for either the 57 Dodge Car, or the Dodge Truck 315 hemi. As noted previously, the intake, heads, carburetor are all D-500 castings or tags--fitingly since the car is a D-500 model. Ed

Ed, you are right, the car is WAY too nice and complete to be a parts car! It would be a crime to part it, in my opinion, and I am sure 99% of the rest of us on here would agree . You did the right thing in the auction when discussing the police car items. You never stated that it most definitely is a cop car, but rather has the outward appearance of one, including its color, hipo options, and lack of carpet, and it is up to the buyer to make that determination. I love old original police cars/government cars, and trust me, I wish there was a smoking gun (pun intended) on this one to prove it is, as that would be ultra-cool.

Good luck on the sale, and thank you for saving an awesome machine!

Matt

It has been reposted to eBay with a clear description of the stamping number on the motor block. Included are photos of the matkings, photos of the engine compartment, 12-inch drums, and an explanation of the reposting.
